Knowingly driving with failing or inoperative brakes could potentially result in liability. So can driving too fast for conditions. But ABS does not necessarily help you stop quicker, it is designed to prevent loss of directional control during hard braking. So I can't imagine how they could make ABS disable stick as fault in a liability suit. But I don't doubt a scummy personal injury attorney might try.

I have yet to experience any issues with the ABS in my truck but...
I drove a GMC Safari as a work truck for 8 years, and the ABS in that was a joke. Braking in the rain became a sport, timing the release of the brake pedal just as one of the front tires came in contact with a manhole cover. If not, that wheel would slide and then release all braking power of the other three wheels. The ABS would not groan cow farts because I was not hard on the brake pedal at the time, even if I stood up, all my weight the ABS did not work correctly. I had to learn how to safely, manually prevent this from happening.
If this ever happens in my truck, the ABS kill switch is going in.
Learning to drive a vehicle in a fashion to outsmart the computer is bullshit.
    Ok end rant.

In his defense, cops don't have the *freedom* to make judgments, they are only allowed to record what they actually observe. Judgment is what a *judge* is for, and why you should check off the "take it to court" option. You don't even need a representative, just a few simple questions to cross examine the cop with, like "was there ice on the road?". More likely than not, you will be let off the hook for it.

Why replace brakes when you don't have to replace ANYTHING?
A proper downshift from anyone who isn't a complete ape won't have any appreciable wear on the clutch. The only move that has appreciable impact on the clutch is engaging it from a stop, when you can't help but slip it a bit. No other use of the clutch will involve any appreciable slipping.

Random internet post, you mean like ^^^ that one?

One downshifts in order to improve one's CONTROL over the vehicle, and extend the life of all components involved.

I do NOT find the ABS on this vehicle to be appreciably different than any other vehicle. The problem with ABS is that there are limitations to what it can do/sense.

And the problem that ABS is there to correct, is NOT about stopping quickly, its about panicked drivers locking their brakes and losing their steering. When the wheels are locked, you can't steer. The other side-effect of locked brakes, is that you also can't stop. So that is a double hit against bad drivers. Bad driver gets into an ugly situation, jams on the brakes and loses both steering AND stopping.

So the trade-off with ABS, is that it maintains at least ONE of the two... for bad drivers. And since bad drivers outnumber good drivers about 10:1, this trade-off makes STATISTICAL sense.

I will give an example of where ABS fails on ALL vehicles; a patch of ice under ONE SIDE of the vehicle, but not the other. Without ABS, you can stop with all the force of both wheels on one side, though it will pull towards that side, you can compensate by counter steering. In this situation, the ABS will kill your brakes altogether, since it uses the difference in speed to judge that it is slipping and works to balance the speed.

The problem with killing the ABS, as others have pointed out, is that doing so also kills the VSC, which is actually a very nice feature when driving in extremely slippery conditions. The other problem with it is that since bad drivers outnumber good drivers 10:1, you are *probably* a bad driver and therefore need the ABS to keep your steering working ;-)

Time for you to face the fact that using the clutch to slow a 2000 lb vehicle will wear it out.

Every time you depress and release the clutch with the engine running you are wearing it out for Christs sake.

Down shifting is not going to make any measurable difference.

Ah.....no. Food for thought, how many channels are there on the ABS system on the Tacoma?

A quick read for your enjoyment.

It makes no difference how many channels it has. It matters what it does when it detects BOTH of the wheels on one side of the vehicle decide to stop turning.

If you don't understand why the system uses different channels how can you comment in an informed manner?

Like I said, the number of channels *does not apply*. This is a question of YOUR lack of understanding of the system.
