Yeah, filing both is definitely insurance fraud.

On the other hand, file it with Geico (since you're dropping them anyway). That way you won't have a premium increase with Allstate b/c you filed the claim.

I have no idea if this is legal or not (somebody mentioned that having two policies on a single car was illegal in NYC, so check it out for your area), but assuming there was nothing illegal, I'd file w/ Geico before dropping them.

The first week my inlaws lived in Dallast TX they got hailed on and got $5000 from the insurance company for each car. I think you can only get the cash if you own the car stright. But you have double coverage I dont see why you can't get two checks :D its its illegal to have two claims then it should be illegal to have to pay for the two policy and one of them should be able to give you a full refund affect the day the second policy became effective :D

b/c it's illeagal and you'll go to jail.

Like some have said before, it is illegal to have two policies on the same car (at least some places). Normally, when you get a new insurance policy, you notify your old insurance and have them issue you a refund for the premium paid for the period of double coverage.

Alternatively, you tell your new company the last day of your current coverage and the new policy begins that day (what I did).

Well said. I don't feel like looking up texas insurance code...but I'm going to guess it's illegal there too- Several places all around the country are like that...probably for EXACTLY this reason.

So at best- two policies is a overly redundant personal choice....and at worst illegal.

but I do think the making the claim with the insurance company the OP is going to drop is the way to go. It can still be reported to the new company...but it's most likely going to be a bit cheaper.
