@Tmill I guess it just depends on if you want to live with your truck looking the way it does and pocket the money for mods etc, or start over with a good down payment on new or used Taco... Upgrade time?

Well, in my post I was just trying to give the OP my opinion regarding his truck, so he might care or not.. just my opinion.

Been a couple of days since I saw someone get his thread locked and then got banned (over60) .. as innocently as this thread started, it'd be hilarious if it happened.

Well talked to an appraiser today while he was waiting for someone to pull up. He said "hope you didn't love it too much" and he didn't even see the bad side of the truck. Meeting with the appraiser on Saturday since that's the first appt I could get.

Here is a pic of my street. Yes that is all hail.

Damn thats some of the worst hail I've seen! Sorry to hear about your truck, I hope whatever you decide it works out for you OP. I tried avoid posting in this thread but there are just a couple quick points I want to clear up regarding hail repair:

-Hail is typically repaired via PDR, conventional, or a mixture of the two. Something like the OP's would fall under conventional where panels are replaced
-That being said the lighter panels not pictured may be repairable, but the heavier dented panels shown should be replaced if fixing properly. No PDR specialist could properly repair these panels as they're way too stretched. Same goes for a body tech, way too stretched unless you want the whole thing filled past recommended industry standards.
-For lighter hail dry ice, a torch, glue sticks, hand tools, etc. will work. Some of which is pure black magic, but they all have there limitations.
-Hail does not chip paint directly but causes paint to ship around the edge of the crater it causes as the paint cannot flex as much as the metal has.
-Contrary to a previous comment my experience has found that OE refinishes are much more likely to dent than a panel that has been painted post production. Although it's only speculation I believe it's because painters apply more product and have a heavier build than the robots in the factory that have a strict tolerance on how much product is actually applied to the panels.
-If it goes unprepared it should go without saying that the areas with bare metal will begin to rust as mentioned earlier.

That's just my two quick cents, good luck with whatever happens with your truck. Hopefully you'll be happy with however it works out.

And the verdict is in. $9.3k in damages. Not totaled. (Getting a second estimate when I have a chance to drive to San Antonio)

So I have two thoughts here.

    1. Get a shop to do a solid repair back to stock condition.
    2. Get a shop to do a modified repair possibly painting the truck with rhino liner or something of that sort. Changing the hood out for a non scoop version and having them not touch the headlights so I can do BHLM and HIDs.

Anyone have any ideas on a way to paint it besides rhino liner? On a bow hunting forum I saw something different. Trying to find it now. Any downsides to be noted?

Part of my reasoning is I'm afraid that paint won't match if they done paint the entire thing since the truck is 9 years old.

Well, it's obvious that some things like the hood, front fenders, bed side and even doors COULD be replaced instead of trying to pop out the dents. The only bad thing to repair seems to be the roof panel, and door frames. Considered fiberglass fenders, and replacement hood? Maybe something like a Pelfreybuilt front bumper? Could be a good motivation to do some mods, if that's something you are interested in...Or, Rhino Liner, or Line-X liner should hide the dents...just my $0.02...

The estimate had replacement both left side doors and left side bed. Roof, pillars and right side all traditional repair.

If the plan doesn't change, check out montaliner. Some tw reviews as well as many other forums. Would be my first choice in your situation.

Thanks I will look into it. The other way is Kevlar paint which is around $4k. I have heard it's amazing.

When you say the whole right side is conventional repair do you mean PDR or do you mean conventional repair and refinish. If it is RP and RF it sounds like the whole truck would be being painted and you wouldn't have to worry about colour match.

Roof and pillars are quoted to 46 hours of conventional and the right side is PDR.

^^^^^ Great advice. My only problem with USAA ever was with an "independent claims adjuster" who was in a big hurry to "quick look and run" without checking all the damage on truck or even checking mileage. USAA has been great to me except for this one guy who was NOT an USAA employee.

Do you have "diminished value claim" after it is fixed in your state.

Meaning, it's not worth as much repaired as it was before damage.

Ask USAA about "dismissed value claim" in your state
    .

Downsides. Since your truck is low mileage, stock, and will not have a salvage title, finishing it with any non-standard finish will hose trade in value and greatly reduce your market pool of private buyers, should you decide to sell.

If you're committed to being a long term keeper, it won't matter, as a well done alternate finish will outlast an OE type 2 stage paint, particularly on an outside kept and woods used vehicle.

Just for grins, ask the adjuster what would happen after the repairs are properly done and a repeat storm occurred, and you had an alternate finish on the vehicle. Would they care?
