Lined the bed with a tarp and got half a yard of compost dropped in
closed the tonneau turned on ECT and drove an easy few miles home
    no muss no fuss.

A bit of a drop but nothing fantastic on my stock 2021 SR5.

Will it hurt to leave it in the truck a few days ~ 1 week as we casually
unload it or do I need to get that out as soon as possible...

Should be fine. A lot of people keep a lot of weight every day. Topper, tools, tool boxes, gear etc. you’re good

It will be okay. In the future you could add helper springs, air bags or these: 21ACD6D9-ABFE-47A5-A8A0-9520AD8716AD.jpg

Not sure how much compost weights, but I've had a half yard of Colorado stone in my previous 2018 TRD sport and although I would probably blind on coming drivers at night, it did just fine, but surely wouldn't do that on a regular basis. I can't remember, but the place I buy my bulk materials weights your truck as you go in, then again when you go out in order to charge you the proper amount with out a lot of unnecessary fuss and I don't remember being concerned about the 4 mile drive back home.

Tacoma having the lowest payload rating of any midsize truck by far, there have been lot of posts over the years here about overloading the truck. The consensus is that truck can easily take it, it's just the legal consequences of if something happens could be either none or big depending on where you live etc.
