The key to installing axle seals is to make the outside of the seal flush with the edge of the housing it is installed into. I also smudge a thin layer of rtv around the outside edge of the seal itself but I think it is completely unnecessary. I had to redo the seals on my honda twice until I realized I was pushing the seals too far in... they must sit flush with the outer surface! It is very easy to accidentally push the seal to far in on one side when installing, just use your finger or a seal puller (very gently!) to pry it up to where it is flush all around.

Harbor freight sells a and for really cheap and it can be used for many other things... if your someone who does your own maintenance its great to have.

I used a socket flipped upside down. Just lightly tap the socket with a hammer against the seal while you move it around the perimeter of the seal. Slowly work the seal to flush with the machined surface until a portion of the socket surface is touching the machined surface and seal face at the same time. That will ensure it is even and not too far in.
