I know what it is - the bronze bushing isn't perfectly square to the spring. The spring wants to make a new home against the part that it is rubbing the most against. I'll continue to tamper, but if I can get a cheap clutch pedal replacement I'll cut the lever off of the one I have and start over on the bushing. If it wasn't such a big part of how driving the truck feels I'd be over it by now, but it really makes it feel way better when the bushing is all greased up for the first few pushes. Then the grease gets pushed out. That might not happen if I have it perfectly square against the spring. We'll see.

Not an improvement on timing to post again, almost 10pm and sleepy, but how did it work out? Did you keep the brass mod or do the spring after all? Wanted to see if everything went well for you. I will check back tomorrow, bout tapped out again :)

I've been reading all posts related to "squeaky" clutch, as my clutch was squeaking from time to time. So today I looked under the dash to see how difficult the mod can be. I was surprised to see that I can't modify my clutch pedal torsion spring because my truck doesn't have any. My truck from the factory came like that:

I checked if it was already modified, but there are no points for the connecting torsion spring and the pedal does not have the metal lip.
However there is some plastic rod inside the spring of 1/3 of the length of the spring. The end is visible on this picture.

Not sure is it for keeping the spring from vibration or what? Anyway I think this is the source of my squeak .

I saw some 1995 trucks that already had the torsion spring, so Toyota must have changed the design it in early moths of production. I guess my Tacoma is one of the very first batch of the first generation Tacomas. Maybe I should claim it as antique or classic car :).

"First Run Edition" lol ID'd by a lack of torsion spring on the clutch pedal.

The brake pedal spring I bought that ended up being too wide in diameter to clear the clutch pedal bracket said that it had a dampener on the package. It has a piece of material inside the middle third of the spring that sounds like what you're describing, so I'm guessing that's a dampener. Seems like a little oil or grease would get the squeak to go away if it's the dampener.
