So, I just stumbled upon this for the first time. It is a very old thread, but probably the greatest thread on TW. Kudos to @Krazie Sj for having the ball to post his mistake knowing he was going to get blasted. Respect.

Stumbled across "HALP" for the first time while reading up on tranny issues. Funnily enough they came after my first diy oil change.. Laughed as I realized I also drained my tranny fluid (weird that it was red, but maybe the last oil change used some red stuff, and it was a little overdue, so maybe that's why only 3qt came out but my truck needs 5.5qt of oil). Please laugh at and with me, and tell me if I can add the same amount of tranny fluid back in (through the coolant, right? jk) without having to do a full flush

 

Put 3 quarts back in. What engine is in your truck?

 

It's 4WD 4L 6cyl

 

At a minimum, replace what was drained. These trucks came low from the factory, so I'd add another pint the check the level.

It's a sealed tranny, soooooo you gotta jump through a hoop or 2 to check the level. The fluid has to be in a temperature range and the Allen wrench bolt removed from the pan to check the level.

Ya, while the engines running.. be careful.

There's a bazillion threads about it. Read up on it. AND, buy a new gasket for that bolt.

Almost 15 years since this thread was started and soon three years since I joined, and I only came across it just now. Hall of Fame stuff here. Not sure if they [OP] are still around, but Kudos to them for posting and sharing with us. staying with it to the end, and having a sense of humor about it. Don't think I would have had the guts to admit it, never mind post/share it with the world. Priceless.

Just found this looking for something else…if it makes u feel any better, 4months after buying my 09 used, was changing oil, 4yo grand daughter wanted to watch, got distracted, drained tranny, added new oil. So no tranny fluid, and roughly 11qts of oil in engine, made it about 10 miles from house when truck let me know what I did ROFL

 

I thought this was a joke at first, things like this happen to all of us, thanks to the OP for humbling yourself and sharing your experience
