Rocky Mountain Overland has organized a seminar to introduce people to ham radio, and help them prepare for the test. It will be held on April 25th. There is no charge for the seminar. It will be held at the Summit Event Center located at 6th and I225.

Attendees will gain a good understanding of the fundamentals of off road comms and why amateur (ham) radio makes more sense than any other communications device on the trail. Additionally, attendees will learn:

    1) What to expect for ham radio performance

    2) How to select a radio and set it up

    3) How to do a foolproof low-profile antenna mount

    4) How to integrate tablet-based mapping and automatic position reporting (APRS)

    5) About HF (shortwave) digital radios and much more

    6) Study resources for the FCC's Technician exam and receive a list of local testing venues where a monthly test can be taken.

Bit of a drive for me, lol. But I'd like it if someone did the same thing around here.

I got licensed two years ago, only thing I'm sorry about is that it took me so long to do it. And there's never been a better time, you can get into it equipment-wise for about 50 bucks - one of those cheap Baofeng radios and a decent antenna and you're good to go.

No, we figured people would want a little time to study. The ARRL (amateur radio assn.) organizes the tests and already has them scheduled out for a while. There are 4 tests scheduled in May. Check out this link for times and locations. http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-exam-session
