Nice video and photo showing that second leaf in the hanger - where it is not supposed to be!

Stock Dakar leafs will catch in a hanger long before the bp51 shocks limit travel. The cure (as per Eric), is to trim the second & third leafs - just short enough so they cannot contact the hanger. When installing my HH, just hung my rear axle off the nitro shocks - they do limit droop so the stock brake lines are protected. However, they also prevent the droop that the HH provide. Got to modify leafs, install Achive bushings in the shackles, change to a longer shock and extended brake lines for the HH to work fully.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
my springs are limiting my travel by being overloaded. it needs the aal....I'm guessing I'm missing out on about 2.5" because of my bed weight. the down travel is ok, not great... but knew that going in. I'm looking at a more robust/reinforced suspension like a total chaos/camburg fronts and build up the rear on my own since it's not a 'go fast' truck.

I'm posting this here to help anyone looking for info. This is a factory leaf spring broken down into a single leaf to test full droop and full bump with hammer hangers installed. The stock leaf spring clamps limit the droop and do not allow for the shackle to totally flatten out like it would with upgraded aftermarket leaf springs. So with that said here are my measurements on stock shock mounting locations with hammer hangers.

26 3/4" - Fully drooped with factory leaf spring assembled (with clamps intact) and progressive aal
28 1/2" - Fully drooped with factory leaf spring broken into a single leaf and 2 1/4" wood blocks to simulate the same dimensions as my leaf setup not broken down
15 1/2" - Fully collapsed u-bolts to frame mount for bumpstop (no actual rubber bump stop in the way)

Thanks for doing this, good info. With a bumpstop compressed to max, the stock leaves are around 10" travel

After all the talk about the issues with the Dakars I decided to finally take a look at mine at see what they looked like while changing the oil this weekend.

Looks like I managed to somehow take a gouge out of the cylinder portion of mine as well as dent up the sides a bit. Looks like hammer hangers and new shackles are in ordered sooner rather than later.

Edit: Didn't even notice until I posted this but it looks like I might have smacked the hanger itself in the second picture too.

Can you attach or PM the link from where you got these? I cannot locate these without buying the entire kit (bolts, bushings, etc)...which is like $82 per side

Are the poly bushings for stock shackles on your website priced per shackle, or for the pair for both sides (complete)?

With the HH, I'm going to install a U402 Stage II leafpack but it's rated at 3" lift; I am only looking for 2". I can have them re-arched, but would adding longer shackles be a good way to bring the lift height down, instead? Any issues doing it this way?

Edit: I just read a few pages back that the longer shackles only drop the height by 1/4", so I guess I'll have to re-arch.

Yeah, I think the U402 stage 2 would be ~3" lift with about 400lbs or so, based on some customers

So I have been getting this question a lot: Can I lower my truck a lot, like 1"+ using longer shackles or can I get a 3" lift leaf only be like 1.5"? The answer is NO, and here is why:
    • Extra long shackles is not ideal as it changes the pinion angle the wrong way, this is a bad idea.
    • But it is also not possible, as the shackles are under the frame rail slightly and can only be so long
    • Remember that adjusting one end of a leaf spring 1" only affects the axle half the difference
    • With stock hangers, the longest shackle you can fit is ~3.6" with stock hanger, any longer will hit the hanger "bump", stock hanger has a bump below the frame (see pic).
    • With Hammer hangers, longest shackle is 4.5", this puts the rear spring eye a little higher than possible with stock hanger, negligible change to pinion angle, ride height would be slightly lower than stock hangers.
    • True Long Travel kits you see with really long shackles is only possible because they move the spring mounts outboard out from under the frame rails

@ARCHIVE Trying to save some money here. I was thinking U402s or RXTs. But I see you have the AAL option.
'17 with Hybrid front w/winch. Full reinforced Mobtown skids v1, sliders, HC rear. So, armor adds a bit of weight. Plus I run a Decked loaded with tools and recovery equipment. Daily.
Any trips, adds a easy 200lbs in coolers, camping stuff.
Stock springs have a Headstrong 3AAL currently.

Would your AAL be worth it or just get a leaf pack? I get to FSR roads here in Fl about once a month. Try to take good out of state real wheeling trips at least twice a year.

That sounds like 500-700lbs added to rear axle over stock, so I am thinking a new pack is better, but part of the equation is how much lift you want?

Well, if the AAL gave me a inch. Probably lost 1 - 1 1/2" in weight. So, I'd say 2inch or so.
