That is the number one reason my house shall have a shop. A lift makes all my endless projects 1000 times easier.

Definitely worth dropping the HC bumper, even just for making the work less like drudgery

Jack the axle up from the pumpkin as far as you can.

Put 6 ton jack stands under the frame in front of the leafs and let the axle droop out.

Unbolt the shackle from the hanger.

Grind the heads off the rivets flush with a flap disc.

    https://www.amazon.com/Premium-High...aWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl&th=1

Use an air hammer with a flat chisel to knock off the entire hanger

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GFV6SY1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Grind the rest of the rivets off, flush with the frame.

Use the air hammer to knock out the two rivets on the side of frame. If they don't come out, use a 1/4" drill bit and drill a little bit of the rivet out. Don't need to take much out at all. Try the hammer again. Rinse and repeat.

With the two rivets on the bottom, rent a ball joint press kit. Use a 5/16"x1.5" grade 8 bolt and press out the rivet. Dont try brute force otherwise you'll bend the frame. The only alternative is drilling it out. Start with 1/4" and then jump to 1/2".

Drill all holes out to 1/2"

I know it sounds like a lot but it's not too bad. If you don't already have it you'll need to buy an air hammer kit. You'll also need to rent a ball joint press kit, which is free after you return it

My only other tip I'd add to that is if you can't get to the two rivet heads on the bottom, just cut off the brunt of the hanger. Whether that's with an angle grinder or a torch or whatever, it gives you some room to work.

FWIW... the two lower rivets, I took my 4.5” angle grinder with a cut off disc, and basically made 4 slicers in the head, and chiseled the head off with a nice sharp chisel. I couldn’t justify spending the time or allowing that much spark under my truck. I was amazed at how quickly the heads come off of the rivets... It was just the drilling of the lower ones that made me hate life, and only because the two pieces being riveted together came apart...

Helps keep me occupied during these slow times :D I don't mind. Plus I vary the instructions based on what tools someone has.

If he's in CA then he can't buy the "short barrel" hammer you linked #felony

@Ubaderb that's the method, I didn't need the BJ press, just a 3lb stubby sledge & a lot of swinging. :smash:

If you ever have to do the job again, def recommend the press. Takes two seconds per rivet to press it out if you've got a worthy impact gun,

I just used the beating method on my 1G Tundra, took the bed off, room to swing, got 7 rivets out clean, BUT one rivet was stubborn and it actually nippled(?) the frame because it is only 1/8"

    Very true.

Just took the first trip with the wife baby and dog, so the wife was up front, but I'm not telling her what I feel/notice...but I'm now really eager to buy my suspension upgrade, wish your leaf pack (medium grade) was available in the near future!

Nevertheless stoked about the vehicle feel over ruts, washboard paved roads (so far).

    I've now driven approximately

I line the dual voltage setup. That could be handy. Make sure you have a dryer on your compressor.
