Camping gear #1 something to hang on, trees will do.

Sometimes it's cold enough to stack gear. Had to pull out my fleece for a few extra degrees of warmth.

It's that time of year here in the south, so I'll be looking for any excuse to disappear into the woods and not be covered in sweat. I recently picked up a SnugPak under blanket and I'm ready to test it's worth.

Got an ENO singlenest and profly tarp during the Secret Santa 2016! Super excited for camping season as right now it's a little too cold here (9* F this morning).

    Welcome Nick.

How tall are you? A single nest is good for smaller people, larger people usually feel cramped or squished in a single. **Pleae note Single and Double refer to the width of the hammock, not the amount of people** Get yourself a decent Underquilt and Topquilt/sleeping bag and you'll be set for cold weather camping. A hammock and even a light breeze will suck the warmth out of you even at 50*, convective heat loss.

I'm 6', 175#. I almost thought about sending the single back and getting the double but I think I'll be ok with the single. I planned on using my sleeping bag pretty much all the time when sleeping in it anyhow.

    Got any recommendations for underquilt?

Yea, give it a shot. I am 6'1" 230lb and prefer a double. The 'correct' way to sleep in it is diagonally(insert harry potter skit), so the double gives more 'length'. A sleeping bag works fine, I use a 20* mummy bag, the taper of it helps it from spilling out the hammock. Shopping for an Underquilt is the same as for a sleeping bag, look at length and degree of warmth (Down v. synthetic depending on your needs). Here are a couple outfitters, I have personally met and hung with the owners of Jacksrbetter and Mid atlantic.

Anyone tried the Bear Butt stuff? They have a low priced tarp that looks like a good alternative to the Kelty Noah, and their slipover bugnet keeps popping up on my suggested products. Curious about firsthand opinions on quality.

Just spent a weekend with some buddies who have Bear Butt gear. No issues or concerns occurred over an extended weekend of camping and fishing in Mosquito Lagoon. To compare, much of my gear is super budget and picked up on sales, or I've made it myself (bug net).

I'm having issues with uploading pics from Photobucket at the moment....

It's been some time since I've been in my hammock, but here are the details of my set-up.

*BIAS Weight Winnie Hammock w/whoopies & adjustable ridgeline
    *BIAS Buginator
    *Hyperlite Cuban Fiber Tarp
    *Mid-Atlantic Top Quilts (35*, 20*)
    *Various pads for bottom insulation

We'll hammock on short weekend trips, but on anything over 3-4 days we're still in a tent.

When you say, "we", who are you including? I've yet to bring my wife along for hammock-camping trips, and I just now realized that she may or may not care for it (ha!).

I Hammock camp every time I camp! My wife likes it too, she was skeptical and even fell out of it the first time getting in one(poorly hung on my old tiny balcony). Her first night camping in the hammock she slept all night and wouldn't get up the next morning for coffee.
