Had these guys on my truck for less than 7,000 miles and they're turning brown on me. They're not dirty. Been doing some research and apparently it's not all that uncommon. Just kind of annoying because my tires look brown even after I wash my truck, and I'm not really wild about having to put a cleaner on them, every time I wash it, to get them to be the color I paid for, black. image.jpg

I contacted Hankook's Tech Support team today and they called the dealer where I purchased them. Will let y'all know what happens. Not looking for all new tires, but more or less a permanent fix, if such a thing exists.

Nothing is wrong. This is a natural process called "blooming" where the anti-ozonants inside the rubber compound are migrating to the surface.

    http://www.adamsforums.com/topic/27661-pro-tip-tire-blooming-and-why-your-tires-turn-brown/

If you want a good tire cleaner, grab a bottle of "Amazing Roll Off" (either buy online or see if any local RV/Marine place sells it). Best stuff I've ever used on tires and doesn't leave them dried out like Wesley's Bleche White.

Thanks Will! Is that a permanent fix or something that I'll need to use on a consistent basis? I'm guessing, by your response, that this has happened to you more than once?

Unfortunately blooming will occur for the entire life of the tire. However, if you give them a good cleaning and then put on a light coat of a water based tire shine (303 Aerospace, etc.) then that would restore the dark black appearance for a while.

Thanks for your reply. I actually contacted Hankook Tech Support yesterday, only to ask them what they recommended to clean them with. I only have ~7,000 miles on these tires, so she asked me to go to the dealer I purchased them from to have the tread measured. The lady calls me this morning and they're replacing all four of my tires. WHAT? I honestly didn't expect that at all, but I will gladly take a brand new set. They definitely have a customer for life, I don't care if the tires turn purple.

I made the same thread a couple years ago about my ATMs. Sure , people say its normal, but I've owned a lot of tires and Hankooks are the only ones where it has happened. 303 made them look good for a couple weeks at least. But it always came back.

Find trucks with Michelin's in parking lots. They "bloom" like crazy too. Especially the LTX's

I have it happen with Hancock Atm and Michalines. In fact all three sets of Michalines have done it. The last and most recent are my Defenders. 303 works until the sun gets to them and then it starts to come back. Very frustrating! Don't know what the answer is.

Way off topic, but I'm looking at the Hankook MT's and am wondering how you guys like them on the street? Only go off road like once or twice a month, but this tire intrigues me.

Great tire minus the blooming issues. Not too loud on the road and are wearing nicely, on my lighter truck. Not sure how they will wear on a 2500. That being said, I'm going to buy Cooper St Maxx's when these go.

Just be sure to use a good tire cleaner and follow up with a tire protectant with no petroleum distillants. In the end using a good tire conditioner is about all you can do if you are experiencing this. I have only had a few sets of tires Do this where it was very noticeable over the years. I think Kumhos were bad about this and can't recall the other brands that did it. Best of luck.

just like washing a car, you need to wash the tire too. Don't fear or shy away from using a cleaner, it's no different than using a wheel cleaner or really soap when you do a car wash. Tires need care like any other car part, they're not maintenance free.

My OEM Bridgestone tires were browning a bit. I hit them with wheel cleaner when I clean my wheels, and a quick scrub. I then throw a gel shine on them (partial to black magic, but to each their own). No more browning, they look great.
