Didn't read the manual since I wasn't using them for safety, really. There are tabs? LOL

I believe they're talking about this piece that's supposed to get bent inward

    maxresdefault.jpg

however that is not a way to prevent the jack stand from failing under load. Copy/pasted this from another forum -

Those tabs are for the following

    A. Stops the Y support from falling out when transferring (prevents injury and prevents damage to surroundings and the Y support itself (dropping can damage teeth / put difficult-impossible to notice fracture in support / nick surface to form stress riser in support... All very very bad).

    B. Stops user from loading the support in an over extended condition (locking tooth at bottom of Y instead of in the teeth of Y... again very bad).

    C. Stops user from mixing similar looking Y supports between different stands (Incompatible teeth / geometries that seem to work but in reality do not. Different rated load supports. Again very bad...)
[Also, depending on the support it maybe even dangerous to switch up Y support between same matching models].

If you want a jack stand with added safety feature, get ones with the safety pins that slide into them. The Harbor Freight ones don't have those safety pins like this

Having to read the manual to find out some tab has to be bent for the safety to operate sounds ab-so-fucking-lutely stupid to me. Then put a huge warning label on the stand by the tab with an arrow. Thinking someone is going to read a user manual for something as simple as a jack stand is like thinking someone is going to read the user manual for their new hammer.

On my failed jackstand a couple teeth broke off, probably more due to casting quality.

Good question. I am probably one of the haters you mention. These days I have 2 heavy steel ramps but usually I just put 2 wheels up on the curb. If I needed to get jackstands again yeah I would probably shop for the best ones I could find.

i have the 29 dollar 4 gallon backpack sprayer. ive used it for 3 years to clean the siding on my house with a bleach / water mix. For a quarter of the price of the competition its fantastic.

I have a hammer drill, oscillating cutter, reciprocating saw that i cant kill, Jack Stands (non recall), Ditch lights w/wiring kit, torque wrench, various other tools. i dont have alot of bad things to say about the tools that i bought there besides im supporting chinese businesses

if it comes to trying to do a job with the wrong tool that cost me hours vs the right tool that does it in minutes ill have to make the drive to harbor freight. Granted if i plan on using the tool alot i do buy quality. Most of my air tools are name brand used and rebuilt

A few yrs ago, Snap On was caught selling a floor jack that was identical to the harbor freight Daytona jack. They were made on the same assembly line, just painted different. The prices were also significantly different, but many people I'm sure would trust the snap on while trashing on the harbor freight.

Wonder why HF just doesn't let the factory bend that tab in?

It's so they can put the stands in a smaller box when the extension is packed on the side of the main body of the stand.

To add to that, how much would a machine cost to bring the two pieces of equipment together? I imagine they arent made in the exact same place, then putting the extension in place and bending the tab would be another machine function, more maintenance, less parts in a container therefore increasing the cost to ship + cost of extra material. All of this would increase the price or decrease the profit margin. Just telling people to bend the tab is way cheaper. How much more would people be willing to pay for their stuff vs going to a "higher quality" name brand? Pretty sure my husky set didnt come pre bent either.

Y’all are fools if you use jack stands from HF. I buy shit from there but nothing that my life would depend on. We all know it’s cheap shit so why trust your life with it?
