I hear they give a origin paper with shipping or when you buy that you take with proof of purchase to dmv.

Never don't it first hand though

I'm down in Douglas County. Just wondering if it's a real pain in the a-- to register and does it have to be inspected?

It is kinda of PITA, you need to go the CSP station for an inspection, and they give you a placard/tag that acts as a VIN, then take all of that to the DMV for your registration.

    https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/csp/get-vin-inspection

I want to say I was close to $150 all in for the inspection and registration.

    My 4x8 trailer costs more to register than my 04' 4Runner . . .

Wishbone, Did you have a floor on the trailer for inspection or was it just the frame?

It had a 4x8 on it, all they really checked was that the lights worked.

Ok thanks for your help. Trying to decide if buying a new one is worth the hassle or if buying a used one with title is easier. Again thanks.

No problem, used with a title will save you quite a headache, I bought mine used, but without title.

Better to ask what I have not done.
When we registered the expo trailer we had to take it to a state trooper post and they have a specific trooper that does it. You have to make a reservation to meet him and it was about a month in advance or so. You need receipt of what went into the trailer and 20$ cash. He looks over the trailer takes your license and goes in and makes copy's and gives you your vin number check. You then have to go to the county Clerck and they will give you the vin number plate and registration and plate.

I bought a 4x8 folding harbor freight job from my uncle who's in Douglas county. He said it was annoying, can only meet with them to do the plackard thing one day a week but it wasn't overly expensive.

Now it has a title and I bought it from him. Was maybe $60+plate fee to register and I'm in Douglas county too.

In California, a trailer must have a form called a title, or I believe in other places it might be a certificate of origin, or ownership. Additionally, the owner must complete a registration form, pay the associated fees, and may require the California Highway Patrol to verify / validate safety features, brake lights, tow features, brakes, etc., not covered by information in the title. That's a separate form, and may involve fees or at least an appointment necessary to have it inspected. The good news is, once inspected and approved, the fees are one time.

If you buy a new one it is easy. Your clerk will use the serial number as the vin. If you get a used one that that never had a plate (i.e. texas requires no plates) you need to find a serial number on it and have the state troopers (as said above) make sure it is not stolen. (who would steal a HF trailer?) If you can not find a serial number.... It becomes impossible. I have had a harbor freight trailer in my back yard, from texas, for >8 years because it was such a pain.

For Sale: old Harbor freight Trailer. might need bearings repacked. plywood needs replacing. no title.

Not true, in CO. They issue a rivetable tag to be used as the serial number/vin during the inspection, which is then used during on the registration.

I saw post 5. I was confirming the particular branch or office.
I trailered my POS HF trailer to the CSP post that my county clerk office said would inspect it. CSP said I was SOL until i found a serial number. I pointed out if i had made the trailer from scratch there would certainly be a way to register it. They claimed "but you didn't and this could be stolen, sorry" in a very curt manner. So i my yard it rusts.

Damn. I had a bill of sale (CL bought), so that helped my cause, it was just a hand written note though, you could probably just make one up and try again LOL.

My uncle titled his 4x8 folding HF trailer in Douglas county. He had to meet with CSP in a narrow time window 1 day a week but other then that it wasn't a big deal. I bought the trailer from him and it has a vin plackard and a normal title now.

The trailer should have a VIN plate from HB but CO won't use it so they give you a plate to put on the trailer. Once you get the tag from CO that what it's titled under. The inspection was really easy as long as you have the paperwork showing you own it. Registration took about 30 min at Assessor and no issues again with paperwork. Inspection was $20 and plates/title was $73.
