I do likewise with the tires when using jack stands and I also use the floor jack for added safety.

I love harbor freight. They took care of the void sears left with its continual downfall of both stores and the craftsman line. Years ago you could hit up sears for almoat any tool etc and it was well priced and decent quality. HF sells most of this stuff now, albeit a bit cheaper due to being made in commieland.

I’ve used and enjoyed everything from gas post hole diggers to a cement mixer from them with zero complaints.

The Harbor Freight 12 ton stands will only go up to 28" if you bend in the tab that holds the center piece like you are supposed to. I believe that if you don't bend the tab, you can go up one more notch (but you might suffer serious injury).

There is a downside of using 12ton jack stands.

The physics that the stands uses actually depends on or requires a heavy load to prevent the release lever from auto deploying.

There is a good video link.

The summary is that the release lever should not be able to lift under load without the safety pin shearing.

So, a very heavy stand under light load may allow the user to accidently lift the release lever without the safety engaging.

Regardless it's always a great idea to use your floor jack as a safety.

Thanks for that link, it is a very good thing to realize using those jackstands. I always throw my wheels under the frame for safety as well, it’s just good mitigation against unforeseen accidents.

Same here. Earthquakes scare the crap out of me.

When I converted the brakes on my 67 Cougar from drum to disc, it was on HF jack stands for months but always kept the tires under there too. No issues with their stands.

I find HF tools in general to be of decent quality, better than Sears IMO, and near enough to the professional quality to warrant its use for the DIY weekend warrior.

Some pros even like them for everyday use and their price is way more reasonable

I agree HF is a great resource for the driveway DIY'er, most of my tools have been accumulated from HF over the last 3 years as I've been learning to tackle doing all my own maintenance and repairs on my truck. Its made it much more easy to afford to do so, and I've had very few experiences with something from there not holding up.

To be fair, even the pro grade tools can let you down, and the obnoxious bloated price sucks, were it not for the door-to-door service.

I'll always keep the floor jack positioned under the truck too after I lower the truck onto the jack stands, just in case.

Lol I do that too. I probably have more stuff under the truck than whats actually in my garage when i'm under it working. Safety first.

Earthquakes freak me out more than anything, over this past summer when SoCal was getting hit with a bunch of small quakes (and a couple big ones out in the desert), one day I was working under my truck and finished it all up, put everything away and went in the house. About an hour later we got hit with an aftershock, big enough to feel for a few seconds and watch the bookshelf sway back and forth. Was really glad I wasn't under my truck still when that happened. I'm sure I would've been OK with the jack stands and floor jack under it, but it probably would've given me a heart attack lol.
