    Im looking to purchase a hard shell for my 17 tacoma. Its a DCSB 4 cylinder. Im looking to see what y'all reasons are that ya got a hard shell? How much did you spend? Leer or ARE more expensive generally? The only reasons I can think of off the to of my head to buy one is 1)For the dog,very large boy and he always messes up my interior when he goes for a ride. 2) If im ever on a road trip and need to sleep I can just pull off at a rest area or something and knock out for the night. I do plan on getting a very small travel trailer in the far future with this truck and I also plan on having this truck for a very long time. Thanks!

    I Always wanted one, had a soft roll up cover that was useful but limiting to bed height. Found one semi-local on Craigslist for $1000 off retail, thinking about pulling it off for the summer.

    Thanks, yeah this is an ARE cx series, I think they run about $1,800-$2,000.

    I got a leer. I'm not 100% on the model but it costed $1400 and it has the sliding side windows, tinted glass, color matched, roof rack option, came with free ceiling liner thanks to a promo they were running, and interior led light. I got it because I'm going to get into camping and wanted a way to score alot of storage space to keep items dry and with the roof rack the ultimate end goal is to have a roof top tent!

    Extra lockable Space is a plus when camping - if you have a LB then sleeping is comfortable. I am happy with the snug. Enjoy your taco!DSC_0237.jpg DSC_0233.jpg

    We've always had one, both the 2nd Gen and the 3rd Gen;

    When we were looking around we found that there were the main distributors like Leer and Snugtop - prices were high, plus shipping here to Canada would make them worse. We also found that there were smaller companies making canopies locally that were very nice. We ended up paying around $2k which was half of the other two brands.

    With our 2005 we went with an Arrow; 70/30 slider windows, sliding front, quick clips for a roof rack.

    We went with a RangeRider for our 2017; 70/30 windows, front slider, passed on the roof rack mounts this time.

    Great video man! I enjoyed watching it and you made very valid points.

    I caved and purchased one. I went with Leer. In my area we only have Leer or ARE as a dealer. ARE was more expensive so Leer it was. Cost me $2K OTD with the a headliner,the slide/fold down window in the front,sliding side windows and it came with a LED dome light. It will be here in 3-4 weeks and I will show you guys a photo of my truck with it once I get it!

    I used some foam but many use silicone. the shell installer should know this but just remind them.

    I picked up a pre-owned ARE CX series for my 2013 Tacoma. I liked it, thought it looked great and found it very versatile/functional.

    When I got my 2019 Tacoma I priced both the ARE CX and the Leer 100R shells and they were within $100 of each other when compared apples to apples. However, both had recent price increases and I have heard that both manufacturers have announced another price increase coming.

    The deciding factor for me was the vented windoors, I found ARE’s to be much better looking and more functional. I would highly recommend getting windoors(flip up side windows) because they add so much more access to the bed. Also, if you really like a feature or upgrade and it’s within your means, get it! You’ll regret it otherwise, buy once cry once.

    I've been searching for a while and that one is my favorite by far. I got a quote from a dealer here and it was $3000! is that in line with what you paid?
