Took my new 2016 V6 Tacoma on a 800 mile trip the day after purchasing it. On the way back after stopping to get fuel, I turned the ignition switch and no start. Then again, and again, and finally on the 4th or 5th turn of the key it started. How embarrassing as people were looking at me having trouble starting a brand new Tacoma. That was yesterday. It has continued to have trouble starting. Anyone else experience this issue? Going to give it a couple days before taking it to the shop. Called a service department and they have not heard of any issues with this

Well there are different types of starting problems, so getting a bit more specific would be helpful. Overall, a proper diagnosis is required since we'll just be guessing.

    1. Is the engine turning over slowly or clicking when you attempt to start?
    2. Is the engine turning over normally, however it's not firing up requiring long crank times?
    3. Does it start but then stall?

    Possible Causes:
    1. Bad Battery or Alternator issue.
    2. Fuel pressure, sensor (cam/crank), harness or ECU issue.
    3. Similar to #2 above.

If you have a volt meter, probe the battery while the engine is off. You should see 12+ Volts. Start the truck and do the same. You should see 13.5-15.5 Volts.

An good point on the auto or manual by Sam B. If it's a manual, try using the clutch bypass button to start it.

after stopping to get fuel! when you filled up did you top it off by continuing clicking the gas pump nozzle?
if so that is the cause now will need some kind of canister replaced........

    It's an automatic.

It turns over cranking. Requires long crank periods

I stopped fueling when the pump stopped giving fuel. Learned my lesson on that one a long time ago

If it's cranking and not starting, then I would lean towards a ground, crankshaft position sensor, mass air flow sensor or the fuel pump.

This isn't the anti-theft ignition key issue rearing its head again, is it? That's the first thing I would check for.

It takes long cranks to start. Usually at least 3 seconds. Sometimes I have to let off and try again a couple times. I once had a 2005 Ford that did the same thing but it was the fuel injector failed open drowning out one of my cylinders with fuel

I've never had this issue with a Tacoma, but my mom's Traverse recently had the same issue. Like some were saying it could be that canister but on my moms all I had to do was replace the solenoid purge valve and not the canister and it runs fine.

Either way, it sounds like you need to get it to the dealer and have it checked out. Nothing simple for you to check at this point. Thanks for putting up with our questions.

Its easy to fry a starter when the start times are long. Easy does it until you can get it diagnosed! They're designed to start right away.

Leaking injector or check valve causing loss of fuel pressure when sitting. Extended crank is usually fuel related

Mine is doing the same thing. Today I hit the start button and it cranked for like 4+ seconds and never caught so i hit the button again to disengage the start sequence. Let it sit for 2-3 seconds and gave it a go again and started up fine. This is the third or fourth time i have not had an immediate start, but today was the worst. My truck only has 120 miles on it :(

Take it to the dealer and they will fix whatever it is.
