fluid type absolutely matters. Gl-5 is slicker than Gl-4 and makes the synchros work harder to get into gear. Had issues with multiple vehicles that came from the factory with GL-5 fluid. Shifted smooth once I changed it out to GL-4. Manual said use Gl-4 or Gl-5.

redline mt-90 or any GL-4 fluid should help if you still have any life left in your synchro.

Swapping the bushing on mine helped, but didn't solve the problem for me. Is an easy thing to try though so probably worth doing, or at least checking.

I'm under the same impression (at 175k miles). I'm not looking for a problem to fix at this point.

How hard is it to replace the return spring? and is there a way to know what type I have other than crawl underneath (like model years)?

You must become one with the transmission. You are the transmission.

it's my advice. take it or leave it. i've had this same issue in multiple vehicles and switching to a GL-4 fluid made them shift much better. just get some redline fluid and see how it goes. it takes 15 minutes to change the fluid. if you go the application finder on redline's site, they recommend GL-4 MT-90 for your truck. Gl-5 for differentials.

Swap in MT-90 and install some Marlin Crawler seats.
Helped mine out a whole lot. If it’s old and had a bit a slope. My short throw sure made it nice again.

Like the above said also. Pedals, hydraulics, then internal.

If that doesn’t help, it may just be a bent fork.
