I've got a 2014 dual cab Tacoma that has a hard tonneau tri-fold cover (Not my truck but the cover is the same https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachments/image-jpg.840271/ ) and I'm trying to figure out a simple and cheap way to mount pair of bars to allow me to keep using the cover and carry the two kayaks shown in the attached picture.

Ive found a couple of great ideas here but nothing that really seems to work with me keeping the tonneau cover in position for bed security.

Anyone have any luck strapping or securing a bars system to a hard tonneau cover?

you might have to make custom rack to be able to clear your trifold to go back.. like mines I did a all pro bed rack and retrofitted my tonno pro loroll to make it fit. the tri fold one it might work if you get a higher rack that doesn't interfere with the tonneau

I dont mind mounting my rack to the tri-fold cover. I just want to be able to keep the cover down and the bed area secure while still having the ability to use a rack system.

Thanks for that link. It appears they are looking to do the same thing I'm trying to and had come to the same conclusion I had. I'm curious how that Mobtown rail system works because that would be perfect for my setup.

the mobtown the 2 crossbar thing?? its a for a soft cover and unless you put it towards your front away from the tailgate and your not gonna lift your last tonneau it would work. but if you widen it like one towards the front and one in the middle you might not be able to utilize your trifold except one turn. but good luck bruddah

When I've got the bars mounted I dont have an issue with not folding up any of the cover. I really just want to keep the cover on to allow me to securely store my gear (fly rods and other kayak related stuff) while still allowing me to transport the kayaks around. My current setup means I have to break down my rods and keep the majority of the gear in the back seat of the cab which doesnt work very well for my wife.

gotcha.. yeah I think that mobtown or thule or Yakima would be a good fit. I think thule or Yakima makes a high rack so it will sit level with the cab for your kayak etc..

The Thule XSportster will only work without a bed cover though...

I have the Mobtown rack and like it alot. I have it mounted with a retractable cover but have seen them mounted with tri folds as well.

You will not find a rack that allows you to open the cover with bars installed.

The only issue is what size are those kayaks? With only a 6' bed, you will have alot hanging out past the back of the truck. You may be better off with a roof mount system, but harder to load/unload.

The two kayaks in the first post are noses touching the front of the bed so I would guess they are about 10 feet long. That would be a significant amount hanging off the bed but I believe I could make it work in Utah and Idaho.

I dont mind the roof or ladder system for loading. I would prefer to keep it a bed/rails mount since I have had bad experiences (ie roof damage) with previous roof mounted rack systems.

I'd be thrilled to find a rack like the mobtown one but that is roof height to keep my kayaks from overhanging so much off the back of the truck
