Hi all, so I have a 2017 tacoma that used to have a tow package on it but was taken off before I bought it. I recently acquired an oem hitch for that year but it didn't come with any of the hardware. I called the "stealership" and to get me all of the bolts and supposedly 2 brackets i "might" need is $188 . I'm hoping for a cheaper alternative. Does anyone know the different bolt sizes and how many are needed, and if the brackets are necessary?

You might check area junkyards and get the parts needed from there.

It sounds more like your truck did not come with the tow package. U-haul might tell you what you need and could install the wiring or give you a free estimate.

As others have said, verify that your truck in fact originally had a tow package. Do you have a trans cooler? As far as spending $190 on necessary hardware to install a used hitch I would consider buying a new Curt hitch and Tekonsha plug and play wire harness from eTrailer for about the same $$$.
My truck had no tow package so I purchased and installed the parts from eTrailer. I had a coupon so I paid $160 shipped to my home.
    Have towed without any issues.

Just wanted to share my solution, good luck with whichever path you choose.

+1 On buying the hitch and wire harness aftermarket. I did this a couple of years ago when I added a hitch and flat-four harness to my previous 4wd and I saved a lot of money over OEM. Hitch looked and worked fine.

I second the Tekonsha plug and play wire harness and P3 bracket to put it in the left side pocket, its nice!

Just a FYI in case it’s not known: there is more to the tow package than the hitch. I’m not sure of all the parts but I believe it also includes the anti-sway electronics, bigger alternator, and a transmission cooler (AT only). Without those things the tow capacity is something like 3500 lbs vs 6900 lbs with them.

I’ve also heard that it is extremely rare for a taco to be built without the tow package and that Toyota stopped including the transmission cooler in new models.

I just bought the TRD Pro and it has a trans cooler. Also i decided to go with the Redarc Liberty seeing as it does 1 and 2 axle which should be plenty for a tacoma.

I spent a little time under the truck this morning. Confirmed no trans cooler. Tow package is now anti sway, 130 amp Alt, power steering and oil cooler.

Go to the owners page on toyota.com and enter your VIN. It will tell you exactly how your truck was originally configured.
