Curious if at these altitudes, the temperatures would be more mild this time of year? 8700’ or so. This trail looks like a fun one, with campfires allowed/gathering of wood if you have a permit.

And why is it that the 395 seems to feel deep in the bones like it belongs to Southern Cal?

Was there a couple weeks ago. Temperatures should definitely be ok. Dropped to low-mid 40’s at night.

I was out here this past weekend! Camped just below mazourka peak Saturday evening, and rode through papoose flat out to big pine Sunday morning. The sun was kinda brutal throughout the weekend, but mornings and evenings felt great (cool 50s-60s). 79-82 mid morning going through papoose flats, felt real stuffy whenever the breeze disappeared. Down in the Owens valley was a different story, I believe it was 104 in big pine around midday. Made for a toasty drive up to bishop and then back home. I think it would be too hot moving forward for my comfort level, but I was mainly concerned for my gf and pup, I can deal with the heat.

Overall a great time, I recommend it!

    GOOD STUFF FELLAS!!!!

Not much people pay attention to the White Mountain range. I think that’s what they call it? From the 395, it sure doesn’t look like the Sierra Nevada range. However…when you roll up there, beauty is abundant.

    Thank you for sharing:hattip:

It sure does. The black and white photo shows no resemblance in beauty of course, but dang, a must see.

I've been looking at doing this trip for awhile now, between Death Valley-Big Pine Road (37.12331, -118.07766) and the town of Independence. My main goal is to hike summits along the route. From what I can tell this is pretty well traveled, but I have a question for those who have done this before.

I have 1st gen tacoma on 31" KO2s with a small lift. Is this enough for the trip or will I get in trouble without lockers/ built truck? I'm assuming it's fine, but I don't have any idea on how gnar' of a trail this is. Additionally, I hope to have a pal in another truck so I'm not alone if I get stuck or whatever. Photos look easy, but it's always hard to tell if things are steep and loose in a picture.

Also, I keep hearing references to "the narrows" being the roughest part of the trip, but I can't seem to figure out exactly where that is, if I can route around it, or if it's anywhere near one of the summits I want to bag.

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

Curious about this myself, as I am relatively new and have a stock height OR ( well with 265/75/16 tires). I am really wanting to take a weekend drive and check out the area, Papoose flats and Mazourka peak.
