    -Under the Oil Pump Cover…..

As I said, I’m no mechanic and am very unfamiliar with the woodruff key……..
so any geared-down guidance for a JV would be great. Ha!

need to make sure that key is good and tight...solid square in the slot

otherwise it'll just twist and destroy the new HB

cant tell from your pic.....but might be a little twisted

Didn’t mean to go silent for this long. Had a bunch of things unexpectedly come up this last month………….

Was just able to get the timing cover off……..I’m screwed, aren’t I?…………

Yep....I had similar 6 yrs ago

it was an easy fix......well except for the $5000 hole in my pocket it left...

    crank3RZ.jpg

If that key can lean....you will eventually spin the next HB...

on mine the A/C kicked on.....and put it over the edge

Its really import to seat the new HB carefully\\
with being such a tight fit....its a recipe for disaster

polish and lube the snout.....and file the edges of the new HB's keyway...
so it doesn't stick the landing

its moved so much on yours.....its busted that timing gear
its thinnest part is on that key slot

your picture is not very clear......need better one

The $5K question is......did that gear get broke from key kicked up and caught by the HB when it was mounted....

or did it break from key rocking

in earlier pic it looked twisted

    upload_2025-3-26_13-37-24.jpg

IF you tap that key back in......does it fit snug/tight

Also you need to check the back of the timing cover and look for hairline cracks on the back side of the oil pump gear area..........a wobbling of HB is really bad inside that

This is where an overall truck evaluation is required. 2.4's are pretty rare to get used and having said that I bet 3 will pop up in google searches, anyway, if the truck is in good shape it might be worth the effort otherwise sell her and let someone else do the project. With the proper tools you could start this on a friday afternoon and be driving her sunday afternoon.
