Has anybody replaced their chrome bumper with a color matched bumper? I have a 2016 DCSB OR in Super White, and was thinking about doing that. If you did it, how much did it cost? Thanks!

I'm interested too. I hate the chrome. I thought about plasti dipping or wrapping it, but there's already so much black trim on the truck, I'd rather just color match. My truck is white also.
I think I saw where someone painted over their chrome in the quicksand thread a while back.

Take to a body shop, have them remove and repaint. Not a big deal. Probably cost a few hundred bucks.

You think they can just paint over the chrome bumper? Instead of getting a blank and then having that painted? Thanks

They'll prep and paint it, just like anything else they paint. It's just a piece of plastic with a coating on it.

sand the chrome down with 80 grit on a d.a.( dual action sander) put a few coats of some selfetching primer in there. Let dry for a bit and paint them. This has been done for a long time on the Duramax forums and elsewhere. Google is your friend "how to paint chrome plated plastic"

Yeah, you may be able to find a shop to paint over the chrome, but sanding and prep on chrome still won't produce the same results as a non-chrome bumper, and over time, you'll likely have issues.

Yup exactly. They said they can sand blast as well, but its still a crap shoot. Some last years, others have issues.

Nope never had issues on my past trucks that had chrome plastic painted. It's not any different than removing old paint. It's just a coating. This is not rocket surgery. Your turd gen will have other issues before your "once chrome plastic now painted plastic" has issues. Painted plastic is still painted plastic. It's all about prep.

Thanks TacoMike. The third gen bumpers aren't actually chrome though, just plastic pained in a chrome color. Does that change things for you?

Why are so many body shops opposed to/hesitant to paint over it then (serious question, not being a jackass)?

A good friend of mine owns/runs a great local body shop, and was the one who advised me not to paint over chrome. Does the prep simply take longer and there's more room for error?

Obviously chrome *can* be painted over. The results seem largely subjective though, from what I've seen. Some plastidip with success, others aren't happy, some paint with success, etc.

You don't paint OVER the Chrome plating. You remove the chrome by prepping the plastic and paint the plastic. Same as you would paint the plastic shit caps that come from the factory unpainted.

    all tore up already
Abs plastic is difficult to get paint to properly adhere to. The chrome isnt going to be able to be sanded off, but with time and patience and some help from tech support i was able to paint my grille pretty well. Well iver a year later it still looks good except for the small areas i didnt scuff enough. Heres an idea of what i did

    20160505_165602.jpg
I was told by sem tech support the most important things would be scuffing, plastic and leather prep (amazing cleaner btw!) And the adhesion promoter. Wouldnt recommend self etching primer as its ment to be used on metal(atleast any kind i sell or have seen)

I think either way man. Us 2nd gen guys have the same issue. Either a full replace or roll the dice with paint.

Thanks. I think if I do it, I'll do a full replace.
