Hey If you buy a vehicle in a different state than your own do you have to pay taxes on it twice? TIA

I can't speak for other states but in virginia if you paid the tax in the state you bought it you dont have to pay the tax again.

No, you pay sales tax in the state it's registered.

We asked somebody at Dave Smith in Idaho if we had to pay sales tax since we are from Montana, (no sales tax) when we drove through, they gut said you pay the tax where you register it. That may just be with Montana though, since we don't have sales tax.

The exact laws vary by state. The last time I bought a vehicle out of state I had the option of paying the sales tax in the dealer's state (Georgia) or my home state (Ohio). The tax rates were the same, so I paid in Georgia.

( This was mainly done out of spite, because no Ohio dealer could or would get me an S-Runner. )

I had to present the Georgia bill of sale (and / or perhaps a separate sales tax certificate) when I registered the Taco back in Ohio, as proof I'd already paid sales tax.

Many - if not most - states require you to pay the equivalent of their own sales tax if you pay out of state. For example, if you live in state X (7% sales tax) and purchase the vehicle in state Y (5% sales tax), you'd still have to pay state X 2% sales tax after paying 5% in state Y.
