Has anyone come up with a mess-less filter removal idea?

This 4cyl motor is a good motor, and I have been surprised at how I have NOT been aware of power loss. That said, the oil filter on the RH side of the engine block is sure a messy design. There seems to be no way to a avoid oil running down the block, and following the trans cooler lines to the rear. This seems to be a normal thing with the Toyota engineers, as our Highlander V-6 filter is mounted at an angle, oil side down, on the front of the engine! At least it does have a small catch basin that collects the oil and directs it into one stream to allow a pan to catch it. (If you are careful and do the job slowly) This Tacoma makes no attempt at all to recognize the issue. SO>.......... Has anyone come up with something that works? (Besides Jiffy ruin???)

I just use a gallon zip lock bag and work real slow giving it time to drain.

I installed a remote oil filter on my '95. An adapter replaced the filter, two hoses ran to the bracket that held the filter. I mounted that on the wheel well inside the engine compartment where it was accessible. Sorry but I don't have any pictures of that set-up and the truck was sold a couple years ago.

It worked for me. Just stick it up between the motor and the filter and bend it so it stays in place and drips into your pan. Enjoy.

I use plastic grocery bags. Double them up because they tear. First, for a remote filter, pull off the drain cap on the bottom, and break the filter loose. Put your hand up inside the bags and grab the filter. Pull the bag up around the filter as far as it will go and hold it there with your other hand. Unscrew the filter. The bags will catch the filter and all the oil. Clean everything up, replace the drain cap and filter.

I put my hand in the bag and pull the bag up my arm as far as it will go and I use the form a funnel - loosen the filter - the oil runs down the the bag instead of my arm and down the form a funnel instead of the motor.

Not sure how much the 2.7 has changed, but on my 2000, I would cut the top off a quart gatorade bottle, loosen the filter, then slip the cut bottle up over it and spin it off. That would catch all the oil and was the perfect size for the filter.
