I was at the dealership getting my free oil change last week - and was hoping to test drive a 2024. They didn't have any, however.

I keep reading everywhere about how (by the numbers) the 2.4 turbo will have more low-end and be much faster than the 2023 v6 (I have my doubts).

Anyway, looking for someone with some real world experience. How did it feel compared to a v6?

The only reason I doubt it is that my wife's highlander has the 2.4 turbo, and it's an absolute dog (even compared to my bigger-tire, e-load-range '23 v6)...maybe the Highlander is heavier though (but I doubt it???).

    Just replying with something related.
My wife bought a Toyota Crown Platinum last year with the 2.4 turbo Hybrid Max. Better gas milage than her Avalon. The power (340 HP) is amazing. That's like the muscle cars of the 1960's.

They all get tuned differently and don’t weigh the same, different aerodynamics, gears, etc.

    Apples and oranges.

So…Just got back from driving an SR5 with the upgrade package. The TLDR version is…Its OK. Not great, not terrible.

Let me start by saying I have never owed a Tacoma. I have driven many gen 2 and 3 trucks and owned a 2022 Tundra Limited. I always hated the seating position and clunky shifting not to mention that I though it was underpowered and the transmission shifting sucked.

Well I felt good sitting in it. Not as good as the Tundra but a lot better that the 3rd gen. For refence I am 5’11’’ and 240 pounds….so not a small guy. My inseam is between 29-30’’ so I have somewhat shorter legs. I had no problem adjusting the driver seat to my seating position and then sitting in the back without my knees touching the seat. However, the seating position in the rear seems like it would suck on a long drive for anyone and that is coming from me who owns a Wrangler JLU. I do think my rear Jeep seats are better. One complaint about the driver seating position I have is actually around the tilt of the steering wheel. It needs to go higher! When getting out of the truck my leg will rub against the wheel at its highest position.

As far as the powertrain goes….A lot of you are going to hate it. The truck I drove had 31 miles on it and the transmission was still learning. It does shift a lot better than the 3rd gen and is quick to shift gears. A big improvement, but there will be no doubt that you are driving a 4 banger. And yes, it does have turbo spool/lag! I found the acceleration to be ok…it is not a race car after all. You will have no problem getting on the highway or pulling out in front of traffic but again it has some spool time. It should be a fine engine in a midsize truck. I will say that the 2023 Canyon AT4s that I have test driven felt better in the acceleration and spool areas.

Now ride quality felt wonderful. Real smooth and solid. Engine noise is on par with any truck without an exhaust system. Can’t comment about HVAC or heated seats as the weather here is perfect for having the windows down some. The screen felt small. Remember I had a Tundra so it is small to me. Larger than the 7” in my jeep for sure….but nothing special. The diver display was good but I did not play with the menus. The size parts have the engine temp and gas gauges. The are pretty huge. I am sure the full size display will be a lot nicer and better. Did not see a manual in the glove box but there was a hitch pin in there which I found odd. Spray on bed liner was done well even though it is not needed.

If I were to get a new Tacoma it would be a Sport Premium or a Limited. I want all the bells and whistles. However now that I have driven one I am on the fence about it. Before the test drive I was 70% sure that I was going to get a Tacoma in a few months but after the test drive it is down to 50/50 between it and the AT4. I hate that the AT4 does not have a power sliding rear window, digital rearview mirror, and home link. All things the Tacoma has. But the Tacoma does not have the auto 4WD like the AT4 as well as does not seem as powerful(2.4L vs 2.7L). I won’t really get much in to pricing except that the AT4 and Tacoma are almost identically priced as I have them configured but I am sure that I would get a better deal when it comes to the AT4. Regardless I will be waiting until the hybrids are out before I pull the trigger on a new tuck. I may even go back to a Tundra. Well that’s all I got!

What you don't want to pay over 50k for a totally underwhelming SR5?

    I paid a little over $41k for a new, loaded 2021 Off-road. I wouldn’t give them 41k for that 2024 SR5, much less 47k.

We should be soon, hopefully I dont buy one this time.

I didnt plan on buying a 3rd gen until we finally got an offroad and I put an order in right after.

The allotments will dictate that anyway.

Curious how you got the pricing between the GM product and Toyota to match for "what you wanted" when it seems like they are 5k apart easy. Msrp to msrp.

Sport Premium is $53070 in Supersonic Red. AT4 is $52190 when I added all the options to bring it up to the Sport Premium package in Volcanic Red. This includes the tow, safety, tech, and AT4 premium package as well as adding sunroof, Bose sound, box lights, and a spray on liner. I did have the floor liners and black badges with the AT4 added another $420. So $1300 to be exact which is a little more than a few hundred which is what I based my comment on about "Almost Idenitcal".

When I build the GMC with those options, I get just over 50K. What gives?

A denali costs less than the sport premium w/o a sunroof and has everything but the roof. Even has a HUD! With a roof, the Denali is slightly more. The interior on the Denali, or really the AT4 is great!

Those interiors on the GMC 'look great', but they are cheap, flimsy and poorly put together. That nice looking padding above the glove box? If you sit in the passenger seat and push it with your fingers, it goes in and out and you can hear it as it squishes in. Pull hard on the door handle and you can see and feel the whole door panel bowing outward. I still like it better than this new tacoma overall but it's not worth the premium price over the Colorado. I'd take the ZR2 for 52K all day.

I posted a ZR2 for 46k the other day, no idea of what options it had, if any. Wild how cheap those can run. Good value if one is into that type truck.

I haven't sat in a Canyon yet, but the pics look good, sad to hear it feels cheap. I do know that Piano black stuff in GM interiors I hate for sure though.

@JB_TN Nice recap. Thanks! I reserved a fully loaded off road and am way overpaying for about 4k in things I probably would not have ordered but are probably nice to have. I wonder how the resale will hold up. I usually buy 1 to 2 years old because I know I will get hammered on depreciation. Now thinking of holding and waiting...I wouldn't consider a Chevy.
