Has anyone ever blacked this out?

One thing to consider about blacking out the lower portion of the dash... It will make the interior of your truck look much smaller because of the dark color. I noticed the same thing when I went from the stock gray carpeted floor mats to black Weathertech mats. The cab felt visably smaller.

 

If you like the third gen interior, it is possible to make that happen. Obviously it's a lot more work and a lot more expensive but someone is doing that right now:
