Heard something smack my windshield and then saw this.
Is this common on high riding vehicles?

And low riding vehicles. They can be filled by any auto glass shop.

Stone chips....? Most people here have a package policy so that a stone chip repair isn't $80/chip. You also save on a windshield repair once you have too many chips.

    Yeah.
Check your Comprehensive coverage. Some companies waive the deductible for windshield repair. Safelite will come to your house/work and do it in the parking lot if you want.

Had the chip repair thing done on my last vehicle when the Insurance Co. insisted that they attempt that first. I wasn't impressed. It might have been 'repaired' but it was pretty visible.

It's a chip. It can't be invisible, like it never happened. Clear glass isn't capable of that.

    Yeah.
It kind of depends on the chip. Most of the Safelite repairs I have had done have made it really hard to tell the chip was there. If it's not directly in the driver's field of view, you usually won't notice it. My wife's 4Runner does have a larger chip that is still very visibile, though. Hard to tell from the OP's pic how big those are, but they are definitely repairable. If it will pass inspection after the repair, that is what insurance is going to expect you to do. If not, they have to replace the windshield.

The main reason to get it repaired is to keep the windshield from cracking. On my old Tundra, there was a chip really low on the passenger side that I never even noticed, and the first really hot day brought a big crack.

    Agreed.

And I meant they're never invisible after repaired because they aren't. You can always see evidence of a chip fill, it doesn't become perfect glass again. You can see every one. Certainly they are clear and see through, and they're pretty damn good looking but still visible and easy to see. I've filled rock chips many times and not one has been made to look like the chip never existed. It looks as it should, as a fill repair.

Many chip repair places will fix for $20 not worth filing ins claim. I found a glass shop in Salt Lake that for $39 will repair all future chips for life The repair is not meant to be invisible but to prevent it from progressing into a crack.

I've lived here in Montana for 9.5 years. Never had a windshield chip until the last 6-7 months. Had one in January on my old Camry. Now that I've lifted my Tacoma I've gotten TWO in a week. Safelite fixed the first one. The second one is up in the top corner of the windshield. They just came out today and attempted a repair. Instantly cracked the windshield so the guy stopped.

New windshield will be in my future unfortunately...
