Has anyone had problems after installing the A/C drain mod?

The A/C drain mod consists of adding a length of tubing to the existing drainage tube in the engine compartment to route the A/C condensate away from the truck's chassis. The mod has been written about on TW for a few years now so there should be some history with this mod.

This is a request for information from those TW members who have this mod on their Tacoma.

I am about to install the A/C drain mod on my truck.

On the side of caution, I wanted to find out if anyone had experienced any negative effects from installing this mod such as drain blockage, condensate backing up into the cabin, bad smells from the vents, or other problems after they installed their mod.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Discounting the fact that this is such a pointless mod (your frame gets soaked every time you drive in the rain), all you are doing is extending a gravity fed drain tube.

i just sprayed some cosmoline on the area where it drips. not worried about rerouting it. already had some issues with the heater box not draining so don't want to mess with it.

None here either and I live in the Louisiana swamp so use my AC a lot. One tip I will give you that applies wether you do the mod or not though. I have the habit of turning the AC off for a minute or two before I reach my destination and blowing fresh air from the vent before parking to dry things out a little regardless. Mold and mildew will even grow on my nose around here if I don’t keep it dry.

Have had it for over 2 years with no issues. I do a quick visual for blockage when I do oil changes, etc. I don't go muddin' so not sure how this mod would handle those conditions. I've read a lot of the posts on this mod and haven't seen anyone mention a clog.

This. This right here. No Tacoma has ever been damaged from occasional drips of condensate that mostly gets blown and dispersed as you drive.

Reading “Yeah, but peace of mind… A tube is cheaper than a new frame..” makes me cackle lol.
Toyota has had plenty of time to extend the drain tube at the factory, or issue a TSB to retrofit their existing trucks. You know why they haven’t? Because it isn’t an issue. They have spent over 3 Billion fixing rust problems. They are smart enough to spend a few more cents if it would actually work.. The rustproofing they do now is more than adequate to protect against some drips. Not to mention driving in the rain or thru puddles … Think about it.

This is why every auto parts store still has shelves filled with ridiculously expensive snake oil. People somehow half-believe it may work, yet they still buy tons of it. Why? Because it makes them feel better . But as we know, your truck doesn’t care about your feelings.

Finally someone with a commonsense solution. I coated my chassis with it over 2 years ago going extra heavy in the area. No signs rust will ever be a factor.

Its the same as some having a need to change their oil after 1k miles. They get that warm fuzzy feeling they did good.

Nope. I'm probably a semi-worst case situation as I hate a/c. Had it there since late 2017. If I use a/c, like when the fam is along, there is no smell and there will be condensed water on the floor of the garage. The only other possible problem would be insects making a home up the hose, but that is the same stock or modded.

this is like the one mod I have not done on my truck. never been too concerned i guess. Truck is well oil undercoated, not sure if that makes a difference in that area of the frame.

Yes. Did mine the first year of ownership. Was doing something the other day and noticed it fell off at some point.

My frame now has a rust hole all the way through both edges.

Edit. Sorry typo. I meant my frame shows zero rust so far. Probably won’t bother adding it back on unless I run out of mods to do.

I would agree that there is no need if you have coated the frame. Otherwise, there are salts in the evap water that you don't want sitting on the coating that came from the factory. I believe there were some pics in the original thread showing some bad things starting to happen.
