Hey everyone, my name is Jeff,
I have a 2017 Tacoma that’s Blazing Blue in color. over the rear wheels on the fender flair the blue pigment is coming out of the paint.
I have a customer support document stating they had a problem with 1100 units built between late January 2017 and early March 2017.
My build date is early April 2017.
Toyota customer service is saying they will not do anything because of the age and mileage on my truck, but the program clearly states there is no mileage limit and they will honor claims for up to 10 years after initial in service date. anyone have contact information to bypass the customer service police to get in touch with someone with authority to help me out?

That support program doesnt apply to your truck for a few reasons.
Your truck was built outside of the date range.
Your clear coat is not flaking or peeling, it just has sun damage.

While it sucks, your more or less on your own here.

More and more of these paint failures are showing up. It's happening to other colors and even newer trucks. I don't blame the OP trying to get some help from Toyota. It's pure BS that paint fails this quickly. .

I dont blame him either, he should fight, but it seems that bulletin is very specific about when cars got the bad clear job and that the clear was flaking or peeling off. His paint is pretty consistent with UV damage.

Toyota uses shit paint, we all know that. But his truck is a 2017, so its pushing 7 years now. If he parks in the sun, which I am assuming he does based on how one side is more UV damaged than the other, the paint will fail sooner.

Toyota really should of used a better quality paint for these trucks, the amount of rock chips I got in the first month made me call and complain about the trash paint.

I guess in my original description of the paint problem, I worded it improperly.
The clear coat surface isn't smooth, it's aligated and the blue paint is like a primer color bleeding thru.
I had the truck at the dealer we purchased it from last Wednesday and the service writer, agreed the truck should be repaired, but he can't approve it because of the build date is 20 days out of the "EARLY-MID" March time period.
Like what kind of date is that, it's an approximation, not a definitive period.
I was going to have the truck painted on my own until the body shop told me about the Support Bulletin.
Why should I put out $2500 for a known problem with a written 10 year time period for making repairs.
I'm not going to let this go, I just need to find the correct phone number and person who isn't working off a scripted response form, that's what I'm trying to get from posting my story.
Hopefully someone on this site has had success with a similar situation and can turn me on to who they talked to or provide me with contact info. IMG_2966.jpg

Having read the documentation twice, I believe, however unfortunate, everything in post #3 still applies.
Not only does the vehicle fall out of outside the program's time frame, it also isn't covered by the description.

In all likelihood you're gonna have to fall back on your original plan and have the truck painted.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the service writer's opinion is meaningless.

At the end of 2022 / beginning of 2023 my truck had the same issues you are describing except it was happening on the majority of the roof area and that was it. I found the Customer Support Program 20TE02 (same as you referenced). My truck seemed to match everything required for Toyota to fix it (including a manufacture date of March 2017). However, when I spoke to the dealer, they told me my truck did not qualify for this program because the actual manufacture date was March 30, 2017, which was over the early to mid-March timeframe. The dealer kept telling me their hands were tied by corporate and that they couldn't do anything about it. They gave me the corporate phone number of 1-800-331-4331 and told me that I may have luck with them. I called 3 different times, and each time got nowhere. I ended up paying for the roof to be repainted myself.

Fastforward to this summer (2024) and I have started to notice the issue happening again but in different locations around the truck: above the rear wheels (just like your pictures) above and below the door windows, the hood of the truck, and the plastic cover on the driver side mirror. I again went back to the dealer, and again they are telling me they cannot do anything about it. They will confirm that the truck is having the exact issues that 20TE02 is covering. They confirm it is the exact color and manufactured at the exact plant location named. However, they will not cover it because my manufacture date is March 30, 2017, and the cutoff is early to mid-March 2017. The service guy is telling me he cannot do anything about it. I asked to speak to a manager, and the manager would not speak to me at all. He just sent the service guy back with the corporate phone number.

Did you ever have any luck in reaching someone who could get you help with this issue? If I forget the money already spent on getting the roof repainted, I will still be out several thousand dollars because of the word early. Looking for help! Thanks!

well it is 8 years old
a detail shop may be able to compound the bad paint off
and if it is repainted the truck will never match perfect
