It's probably costing Toyota more money with the detuned engine by offering it as an option. My guess would be that fleet buyers order allocations from dealers who can fulfill those orders, they are buying trucks that would be built anyway.

If I'm a fleet buyer, I'm buying the NA Frontier, over the turbo Tacoma, maintenance should be less over the life of the vehicle, and the Frontier was already less money.

I have seen SR5 AC fleet trucks, they are 20-21 year trucks, supply chain issues is my theory for that one.

Might not be a bad idea for Toyota to develop an engine between the 2.4t4 and 3.5tt6. Sonething that could go in the Tundra, and the midsize Tacoma and BOF SUV.

Right now if Toyota had an additional engine option for the Tundra that would be a good thing for Toyota, and they could offer that engine in the Tacoma, Halo exclusive or reserved for other premium trims. This GAF platform is going to be around for a while, couldn't hurt to have more engine options.

Tundra is low volume, I can see why Toyota only offers the 3.5. I'm not sure if it makes sense for Ford to offer 4 engine options on the F-150 2.7tt V6, 3.5tt V6, 3.5tt V6 hybrid, and the 5.0 V8.

That's the hybrid turbo 4. They already have 5 truck engines, 3 on the Taco and 2 on the Tundra:
    Base 2.4
    Regular 2.4
    Hybrid 2.4
    Regular 3.5
    Hybrid 3.5

If you want oodles of power in your truck, that's never really been Toyota's game. All of the engines have ranged from weak to adequate.

I'm not saying it's good enough for everyone, but it's pretty consistent with the Toyota MO.

I would go drive a new Frontier and see how you like it, then a Tacoma and see which one shakes out. The wife has a 24 Rav4 AWD 4 cylinder and gets 30 mpg, it moves well with enough power and I have no complaints with it. We had it in 10 inches of snow and it did very well, no issues.

It's still only two engines 2.4 and 3.5 with or with out hybrid. Fords powerboost is still a 3.5, 3.5 and 3.5 hybrid pretty much one in the same. I didn't include the 2.3t or 3.0t from the Ranger and Ranger Raptor. Ford might discontinue or change their designs, and offer less engine options, I'm leaning toward Ford cutting some of these options in the future.

I really can't find an obvious reason Toyota would need more engine choices for there trucks. Once Toyota announced the Tundra engine recall, first thing I thought - the is no other option for the Tundra. That's not good you can't go to a NA V8 you can't get a smaller V6 with or with out forced induction. Toyota wasn't going to build a V6 2nd gen Tundra, but someone would buy them and nobody complained about the 5.7 V8. Why offer it? Only to slow Tacoma sales.

I agree nothing new or out of rountine for Toyota. There has probably been a lot of internal talk since the recall, of if we had another engine choice for the Tundra that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Does anyone really want that base SR engine? I like the SR, and the 1st thing I think, I want the HO engine in the SR.

I would think the Tacoma would ride nice leafs and all, the engine would also feel more powerfull from the torque.

Right now I would buy the KingCab Frontier, there are no XC Tacomas near me. I would also consider the Maverick and HD trucks.

You just want a truck!!! I think Ford is making a mistake by not bringing the PHEV ranger here first.

Ran this through an inflation calculator just for fun, 38k equal to roughly 25k in 2006, seems like a decent deal after the initial sticker shock, I would even say the SR options would be equivalent to “loaded” vehicle back in 2006, but everything is relative, this is 2024, not 2006.

I'm not even in the market for a truck, it's when I start looking to get an idea of pricing and what's available. Ford could do well with the PHEV Ranger.

The KingCab SV I was looking at was still more than that. It was a SV 4x4 Tactical Green the only option it had was the bed step, no technology pkg. I've only seen one other KingCab SV with out the teck pkg that was a 22, there's probably more out there.

The 16 and 17 Frontiers were pretty much the same truck Nissan launched in 2005. the 3rd gen Frontier gets pretty good reviews.

Not on that one it sold last week, somebody probably got a good deal. I was only intersted because it was green and had no rear parking sensors. Not having the parking sensors would have been the deal maker. That truck had a build date of 12/23 not sure how long the dealer had it for. I didn't know the 24s were available with 16" alloys which that truck had.
