I'm looking to upgrade my head unit.

I want the Android auto capability, and more importantly this one has rear view camera capability. However I'm looking for your input/experience to see if anyone has done this install on their truck. I can't seem to find anything about it online.

I'm a pretty handy guy and I've replaced radios before, but nothing with a backup camera.

    I put a Kenwood in my 16 SR5:

I didn’t think the install was any more difficult than others I’ve done. Just more connections. You’ll need an interface module like the iDatalink Mastero. Crutchfeild has good info.

Unlike older vehicles were you just needed a speaker harness and with power, ignition and ground wires. Our trucks have steering wheel controls, backup cameras, USB port in the dash and vehicle options that are set via the head unit. Therefore in order for everything to work properly you need an interface module that will communicate with other systems and maintain those features. So your aftermarket head unit will plug in/ wire into that interface box and it will plug into the truck harness. Before installing you will connect the interface box your computer and answer a few questions about your truck so it can be programmed to work properly.

And yes you need the maestro datalink to retain vehicle diagnostics and steering wheel controls. its an expensive module but well worth it

try not to get a unit with appleplay. it makes it so no one text and drives. i dont text and drive but when youre connected to AP your text come up on the screen and anyone in the car can read them. also you cant use Waze or Google maps. only apple maps. not worth getting AP imo

Sorry to bring up an old thread I made, but I figured it’d be better to do that than create a new thread.

If I want to install an aftermarket head unit, and I get it professionally installed, do I still need to buy the Maestro iDatalink? Will the installers be able to hook everything up properly and it work right out of the box, or will a professional installer tell me to buy it anyways and just put it all in for me?

Just looking to save some money. I still want a new head unit but with the iDatalink that’s an extra 150 dollar premium for getting what I want.

That’s what I figured. Guess I’ll have to bite the bullet then. Thanks.

Ughh I really want to upgrade my headunit to something with apple carplay but every aftermarket headunit just looks so cheap imo.

Bestbuy is running some pretty good deals right now ($ off plus free installation). Most of them look pretty good to me in the 400-500 dollar range.

5D93E29E-13CE-4215-9B54-8FA12DEA5472.jpg I just installed a Pioneer 1500 nex in my 19, got the maestro hooked up, every thing on the wheel works. The only thing I’m missing is the backup camera, there’s a gray wire, has a funny shaped connector and I think I need an adapter for it to go to an rca? Crutchfield didn’t say anything about it, I’m curious as to what y’all have done? Or am I in the wrong ballpark with that gray wire?

That gray wire is the USB. The mastro will have a RCA output for the camera unless you got only the basic SW module. That module doesn’t retain the backup camera. You will need a different module and harness.

Any idea where I can find one Lawfarin? I haven’t calledCrutchfield yet, but I’ve googled and searched on eBay and Amazon with no luck.
