Is there a big difference between the 2nd and 3rd gen suspensions? I have a 2nd with a DJM 3/3 drop and it looks much lower (cab to ground) than the 2017 w/2/3 drop. I'm only running 18s so maybe that's it.

The difference is in the struts, 3rd gens come with 1" "lift" struts from the factory, so when lowered a third gen appears a little taller. Other than that, As I understand it most of the other things are the same, mounting points are the same, same basic design and seems like the spindles, control arm geometry, and other things like that are the same. Most of the aftermarket suspension companies list all parts as interchangeable between 05-15 and 16-18. Also youre probably right about the wheels depending on how much rubber you have on them. A 20 vs an 18 means the truck on 20s will effectively sit an entire inch higher when measured from frame to ground if the rubbers are the same diameter

you've probably been asked before, but why not a short bed with a shorter wheelbase for auto x? (i'm new to tacoma's so maybe the answer is obvious)

used to have a spec miata though and did HPDE/novice racing
