When the weather warms up, I plan on Plasti-diping my Silver Sky Metallic '16 TRD OR cheese grater black. We'll see how that turns out. It HAS to look better than stock!

I think the key to plastidip, as much as people hate on it, is to not cheap out and get it on good and thick. I used 2 full cans, probably 20+ thin coats from all four sides, also did a few on the back first to hopefully not have any edges that want to peel up, we’ll see how it holds, I’ve had good experiences on a previous Tacoma hood scoop and oem wheels.

i just went with matte black, it’s held up solid with a few power washes through winter, we’ll see how it does with bug season.

The problem with painting front grilles and emblems are the rock chips. Unpainted (factory) plastic holds up much better than any paint, from my experience.

141ADFE3-7880-49CC-A5BA-59DA1DA434ED.jpg I had mine painted same color as the truck. I wanted something different than the TRD PRO everyone has on their truck. I have taken off the bedside decal since this pic. I’m trying to decide what rims/tires to put on the truck.

I always thought it was weird they didn't go with black.
I think the dufus who designed the SR5 interior with 5 difference shades of grey must have been moved over to the grill design team.
He is easy to spot, he's the guy with the brown suit, blue shirt, and green tie.

You guys are way overthinking this… Paint it matte or satin black. If the tiny rock chips (aka road rash) becomes a thing, touching up matte / satin black is incredibly easy. Spray another light coat and you are good to go. Source: Ive been painting wheels, grilles, old Toyota bumpers, etc., with rattle cans for a couple decades.

Did mine with hyper dip previously. goes on much thinner and nicer than plasti dip. builds real slow.

I wanna do this too. I was so nervous taking the front off to install the winch that I'm scared to do it again.:anonymous:

Please...oh please....a couple of the best YouTube links for disassembly/re-assembly?

BTW: I used this before I painted my plastic rim center caps. Could help here too?

Absolutely will help. I always try and use an adhesion promoter when painting plastic.

Can you paint the Toyota logo? would it interfere with the TSS on a TRD Sport? I am guessing since it's radar it shouldn't have any interference with a thin layer of paint. I would really like to hide the chrome color.

This looks really freakin good man. Just curious cause it’s hard to see in the photos- is it pretty darn close to matching the bumper/fender trim? Or is that plastic more of a matte color? I’m prepping to paint mine this weekend, but I’m struggling between picking a satin finish or matte finish for mine. Thanks!

Ended up going satin. May be a little darker than the trim, but looks great. I used the behr 2in1 primer and paint spray in satin black. I’d rather be slightly darker than slightly lighter. It really pops and looks mean. For prep I hand sanded with 1500 grit for a couple hours, then washed in the bath tub. Put on maybe 5 coats 20 minutes apart. Isn’t perfect, but I’m more than happy. Before and after photos attached.
