Hill Country is awesome. Up until a few years ago, I had no idea TX had that type of terrain/scenery.

I need to get out to Big Bend too, one of these days.

So my 2nd gen was a great truck. I'm just north of you in Kansas so we drive similar places. My 2nd gen you could put at 80 and drive wherever. BUT once I got up into Kansas City, Western Nebraska, or the Black Hills, I would drop it down into 4th.

On your 3rd gen, just stick it in S4 or S5.

How about this? I'll tow the bike up to Austin this weekend and give my true 2 cents, lol. Big Bend is next year, Blake. I can't wait. HC is really nice; my favorite area to drive/ride.

I pulled a 6x12 enclosed trailer from Wichita to Baltimore an back. Kept it in 4th, it did just fine. Yours should too.

Aside from the guys who have legit complaints about squeaky clutches like this thread. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/squeeking-from-clutch-pedal.409344/ If you look there are more threads like this in the 3rd gen forums.

This is an ongoing problem since the 2nd gens (my truck had it too and there are numerous threads on the 2nd gen forums)

Also chiming in to say that I love my MT Tacoma.

2 months in and this is one of my favorite vehicles I have owned, and I have owned quite a few.

Hi, my 2016 AT has about 13,000 miles on it and I've had no issues. Also, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I spend more time on hills than flat land.

A squeak is hardly on the same category as a hunting transmission.

No joke, this thread has made me feel like a lot of people have good luck with theirs. Seems doom and gloom elsewhere. SF... saw someone do a small burnout by accident waiting to go down Lombard (sp?) St. Love the elevation changes out there.

my 16 MT has no problem in the city either... dont have any complaints about traffic either! Even after 32,000 miles

My one complaint is the gas mileage at about 11mpg from a combination of my 33s and my lead foot. Buuuut im also in construction and have a gas card so really I have NO COMPLAINTS

I will say this... I chose an MT because the gearing is nearly identical to a 2nd gen auto with an extra OD now at .85. That means where I was towing a trailer in a 2nd gen running 2750rpm (50% of redline) and driving 65, I am now running 70 at that same RPM (45% of redline). A few extra mph really helps on the Kansas Turnpike.

You're worried about a use case you haven't experienced yet. And it seems like a use case you might hit often (hilly roads). You still probably should've done research on that use case before buying then. That being said, I live in the Bay Area and have driven in SF. This is SF:

Are you gonna have to press the pedal more? Yes obviously. But you'll be fine. Stop worrying about the trolls here. There's a difference between "wah wah it's not a sports car" vs actual legitimate problems.

Trailering will not be too often for me, but that's a nice feature. I never want to go back to a 5sp after driving my buddy's GTO. That's one long legged car, even with shorter gears in the rear. The FRS was a different story. Did... 45K miles last year, mostly highway in that thing. Taco is like a Benz compared to that thing.

Yep, I definitely should have researched more, but there were reasons to get the auto... ok, reason. Houston traffic.

3rd gens should come with a warning label, either not to buy, or at least check TW first.
