my new 15 has now only 1300 miles and I might have babied it starting out but I'm driving more "normal" now like merging onto the interstate etc without feeling like I want Prius MPG. The transmission is terrible. It seems unsure, searching at times and way clunky/rough. Reminds me of buying a 200k mile beater off Craigs/ List for 1000.00 bucks, not a 30k truck.
Take back to dealer? My time has value to me so since my last toyota was a beautiful/ mega reliable 1983 single cab that the snow/slush would come up through my rusted floor boards but would run forever, maybe this is just normal?
Thanks in advance, especially if there are like 100 threads about this :(

First off, welcome to TW. Sorry for your frustration. Yes, the search button will be your best friend here. I have heard of people having issues with the autos not coming full of oil from the factory believe it or not. If it's acting up that bad, I would take it back to the dealer. I remember back in late 2000's they had a TSB flash for the trans. ecu for people having similar issues. I have the manual 6spd, I have my own set of problems.

I have a 15 auto v6. they do shift a little hard, but from what I have read it may be because its a heavy duty transmission, designed for a V8.

Yeah its normal man. Takes some getting accustomed too. The feeling you get when it shifts into fifth is most likely the torque converter locking up. It does seems confused if it should stay in 4th or go into 5th sometimes. Around town I may run it in 4d to stop it from being stupid.

Overall. The shifts are firm and noticeable, but its completely normal from what I have read.

If it does not feel right then have it checked out. Or drive another new one at the dealership and see if it feels the same.

I can say that mine drives better now than when I first purchased it. I have read that these transmissions "learn" your driving style and adapt. It appears that mine sure did. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on this topic will come along and give you more insight.

Gotta wear it in a little. Should smooth out over time...

Also, stop babying it! You need to drive it like you stole it in the beginning to property break in the engine!

    Cheers,

    Jay

I bought my 2013 brand new. For the first 5 - 10k I had some issues with the trans too. It would miss shifts sometimes, and felt bad. But it was really rare. It doesn't do it any more. Have your dealer confirm nothing is out of wack and let it break in.

My new 2015 auto shifted really slow and weak at 30 miles when I took it home. I've only a few hundred on it now, but as I drive more aggressively it does seem to learn and shift a little quicker and firmer. Or it is breaking in. I asked the dealer to check the atf level when they installed the supercharger but they told me it would be $125 to check it. I guess I would have to make an official complaint about the trans to get them to check the level for free.
