I’m freaking out a little here boys, I gambled and just bought a little 1999 2.4 L 2wd 160k (20 yrs in Florida) for our wild child lol, sight mostly unseen had to pull the trigger or bail… so had it hooked, dragged it back to NH. I was told it needed a ignition switch after the kid replaced the alternator, starter & battery (all look new)
I kinda assumed it was the starter relay but pulled it tried jumping the 5&3 legs … nothing pulled out the ignition switch ohmed it out, seemed ok I think? My last thought is the damn neutral safety switch? Good God what have I done my wife is piiiissed! Feeling like a fool. Two days now no crank ‍

Does starter get power from battery to motor and the trigger wire when key turned?

First, how’s the battery? There’s no mentioning if the battery is good nor if there’s power to the accessories when the key is in the “on” position.

If the lights etc are working but not cranking, check if the truck has an aftermarket alarm by looking for non-factory wiring around the steering column. If there is an alarm, the kill switch is preventing the ignition from cranking.

Check the ALT fuse in the engine bay. Serviced a Tacoma a few years ago that had a blown ALT fuse which cause a no crank situation.

Battery at a full 12.8v I also precariously got a 10.4v reading at the trigger unplugged at the starter (not 100% I had the best connection to ground since I hadda hang one arm in the window while crankin it) I also ohmd’ out the wire between the starter relay and the trigger plug was good. Idfk. My goose is effin cooked if I can’t figure this out before the tax man cometh

Battery lQQks new and is @ 12.8v
Did check all the fuses, no alarm wiring I could see. I can’t believe that stupid effin neutral SSwitch would be the MF culprit and it seems how it lQQks I’ll destroy it getting it off. ‍

As you intuitively said, the “DJ Rappin foo” lied saying “it ran yesterday” the alternator had only the top bolt holding it on just got back from the HW store w a bolt setup and I noticed the inspection sticker said 22/23 live and learn

    Yeah.
Well, I'm hoping you didn't pay a lot for it since it's an older 2WD. Keep at it, you'll find it. It's a Toyota truck. If the internals are OK, it will run. Do you have wiring diagrams? Maybe someone can post some wiring diagrams here if you don't. Or you can do a short membership to TIS and download them.

Oh, and while I personally don't disagree with the sentiment, your avatar could get the attention of the mods.

This shouldn't be hard to diag.

    Let's go...

    Power = 12v

Check the 7.5A STA fuse for power WHILE CRANKING.
If good, Pull STA Relay. Check the #1 pin of the STA Relay while CRANKING.
If Good check the # 5 pin for power.
If good Check the # 2 pin for ground.
If good, Go to starter. Check the Black/White wire while cranking (small wire)
If good Check the big Black wire for 12v.

Come back a tell use what is missing.
If nothing is missing, we need to move on to a couple other test.

did we confirm the motor turn over using a ratchet on the crank pulley....?
Seen many potential customers bring theyre vehicles in stating no crank no start, nice fresh clean oil.......
Before then, they never changed their oil & they were playing stupid, trying to get a warranty engine...
    locked-up!!!

    Something that should be verified...
Unless, it makes zero noise, not even a slightest click when you hit the key...
    but ide still double check..

FWIW, If you jumped pins #3 & 5. You should have sent power straight to the starter.
You also said, nothing happened when you did that......
That leaves power checks at the starter.....

But still, Do ALL the test I posted above.
    Let's do this right.

    Not if you jumped 5 & 3
5 should always be 12v. Key on or off.

I must’ve read this 10 times and everyone’s additions (except the cat who tried to jinx me w a trashed engine ) after I replied & typed out all the steps Ive tried and it’s continued symptoms. It helped me a ton, I had the dash torn apart and ignition switch tested out relay tested jumping the trigger legs, just sparked. I then tore out the harness cleaned all the legs dielectric greased everything put it back… nothing so After tying the noose & finding a strong branch, I made a long enough 12ga jumper w alligator clips and went directly to the trigger leg on the effin starter from the battery and YAHTZEE!!! Evidently the GD plug on the harness was jankeeAF!! I really appreciate you MFs!! I almost tore off that damn neutral safety switch too ‍
