2 12's - 5ft, no extender. You will be fine.

I have two pedal drives i do this to and they are fine.

It's all in how you rig it.

    Then there is this option.

I bought me a cheap jet ski trailer off of Craigs List to haul my fishing yak. I think I paid $100 bucks for the thing and it is great!

I was a kayak guide in college and this type of rack from Yakima suited me well plus I could still use my hitch for my mountain bike rack.

With anything 10' or shorter just put it in the bed, strap it down and drive. Tailgate up or down doesn't matter much. With it down you have 6'+ to lay a 10' kayak or lumber on so most of the weight is in the bed. Strap it down good and you'll be fine.

With the gate up you need to strap them down a little better, but the kayak is going to be high and above the hood of any car that gets too close. If possible, I like tailgate up a little better. But it may easier to get 2 of them in the truck with the gate down.

You don't really need a bed extender that plugs into the receiver hitch until you get to a 12 kayak. And even a 6' bed is going to need one at that length.

OP makes post pushing 2yrs ago, never returns and it manages to get resurrected. Good times! But several good options for folks to reference down the road

IMHO - the roof is the place to transport your 'yak. One can barely tell it's up there except for the looks of admiration and envy from other drivers.8DBDAFD0-D9FD-4376-8BE7-1D6F0CACC874_1_105_c.jpg

You all think I could put a 12 footer and two 10 footers in the bed with tailgate down with no bed extender and be ok?

I’m sure you can,,, doesn’t sound like a good idea, but I think you already know that.
