Hauling a canoe in a short bed

    I have a hitch rack mount that you can extend out a good distance that holds the canoe on arms that you then strap the canoe onto. I think it extends about 4 foot past the bumper and you can adjust the height of it to hold the canoe level.

    I drive a Miata.
    I used to run a 16.5 square stern. It was a collosal pain in the ass to pull from storage on the garage ceiling, transport, and launch. I kept it for about 10 years and sold it after I realized I haven't used it in the last 2.

    Now I'm all about the inflatables. Current boat is rolled up under the bench seat of my camper. It gets a lot more use.

    16.6 foot canoe - the front strap is a ratchet to the crossbar - the two black straps are tie-down straps run through the rack loops. I put foam blocks on the cross bars. Works great for the 5 mile away put in - top road speed is 40. For highway driving I will add a rear ratchet to the rear cross-bar and put a tie-down line to the front end.
