People bitch when someone doesn't search first and posts a new thread. Then people bitch when someone revives a thread talking about the topic in question. I think some people just like to complain.

I just like using that meme. Don't get to use it all too often.

All good. Didn't mean to imply that you were bitching. I just see a lot of threads where someone asks a question and people jump down their throat for not searching first. I still had questions on the matter so it made more sense to just reply to this thread.

I'm in the process of making my version of plywood support. It's going to be the standard 2x6 cross bars and then I have a set of table extension slides that'll be mounted to the rear cross board. Tailgate up, slides are closed against it. Get to the LY, drop the tailgate, pull out the slides (it'll have a cross brace on it with a lip to catch the bottom sheet or two of wood) and load it up. The bottom of the slides will have a piece added to them to sit on the tailgate. Right now, all I need is desire to make this thing. Currently the LY charges me $10 for delivery and I wait until I have a few projects to 'spread out' the charge.

Change of plans. Did this mod instead. Plenty strong enough for the few sheets I tend to carry.

    Great idea
Did you buy those shortened cables or make them?

There the stock cables. I drilled two holes in the bed for bolts. Pull out the tail lights to get at the back side of the holes and use fender washers to spread out the load. The other idea that would work is to go off of the track with epoxy coated chain and a snap clip. Have the length of chain be so that the clip goes onto the cable end supporting the tailgate at the correct height.

BTW, the tip of the tailgate is 6 1/2 feet from the front of the bed. Still need to run a strap around the corner of the sheet from the swivels to hold it in...

Joined this forum just so I could "like" Vssman's post. I've been looking for shorter tailgate cables for a while. Vissman's solution of adding additional attachment points never occurred to me -- great idea.

I have the hitch extender but have been looking for a more convenient way of hauling sheet goods. I've always wanted to use the tailgate but couldn't figure out how. I've also used my bed extender with a 2x4 attached to the top but am concerned that it will collapse under the load and spill my sheet goods all over some intersection.

Welcome to the forum. Took a bit of thinking until it dawned on me to add cable attachments. Plenty strong enough for several sheets of material.

I need the tailgate to handle about 8 sheets of plywood (rather than "several") so we'll see what happens. I've been lucky so far using the bed extender but using the tailgate seems like a better solution. I plan to report back on results.

How much strapping/securing do you think is necessary with that method? Not a lot of tie down places on the bed as it comes.

Well why would you buy a truck that doesn't fit your needs... sorry to sound like a smart ass but if you haul construction material.... even a 6' bed is moot....

So okay, let me put it this way. Craigslist, Ladder Rack, Buy Once/ Cry Once. Then post pics.
