Hauling sportbike in LB, tailgate strong enough?

Just put my order through for a ribbed skin. Can't wait to get it on the gate. This taco modding business has been stressful on the wallet smh lol

Went there this past weekend and ran Lightning-R with TPM. Right now I just have my Speed Triple so I'm not doing too much on the track.

Also, just to get a little back on topic. I've got a short bed and ended up getting one of the mobtown tailgate reinforcement plates to do the same thing you're doing. Ended up Uhauling (2) bikes over to NJMP so I didn't use it, but from taking off the plastic skin and putting on the mobtown one - the reinforced one should be able to hold a sportbike with no issues. Joe from mobtown also suggested if you're just using the stock tailgate, putting a piece of plywood down over-top the plastic skin / underneath your rear wheel - which I agree should also spread the load across the gate enough not to cave anything in. There's another member on here DoubleRGirl (sp?) that pulls bikes a lot too and uses the mobtown skin. All that being said - your long bed might be big enough that you don't need to rest anything on the tailgate.

 

I ride motocross so I have my bikes in the back on a weekly basis; I bought the relentless reinforcement and the motorcycle tie down bar (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fs-motorcycle-tie-down-bar-the-best-one-you-can-buy.334216/) and they were worth every penny. The tailgate isn't going to bend from the wheel on it but it WILL bend from just loading the bikes into the truck. You definitely still need the reinforcement plate....you'll see why when you go to install it. I have a 2015 as well btw; the tailgate is still super shitty.

 

Well then good thing I ended ordering the ribbed skin from mobtown-offroad this morning. Tue, I may not need it with the LB but the tailgate itself just seems weak and flimsy when you opening/closing. Any reinforcement should only improve heft and sturdiness. Can't wait till I get it

 

The tie down bar is nice but damn its costly. I bought canyon dancers for the time being, until I transfer the mounting plate for my pitbull strapless trailer restraint. How is relentless skin different from mobtown offroad? I didnt realize there are more than one vendor selling reinforcement plates

 

It's waaaay costly. That being said, I often haul two bikes in the back and it added a bunch of new tie down spots. I'm super happy with it.

Relentless one goes over the top. I like it a lot and it added a ton of weight to the tailgate; whole thing feels super hefty now. Only issue I have with it is the top cap is an extremely tight fit and scratched my paint up a bit. It's a truck that I take to the track so it's going to get scratched up but still....Would have preferred if it didn't happen in the first 200 miles lol.

I can totally see how the bar is very useful when hauling more than one bike. I looked at relentless and they are nice plates and the cost is the same as mobtown.

I still do fully understand how the top of your tailgate is getting scratched. Is it because relentless plate goes over the top cap?

 

Yea dude....it goes over the top cap and the tailgate isn't perfectly straight. It has a slight curve to it

Hey Yama,look into the bed tie down mods.
I did it and tie everything down to the 6 tie downs in the floor.

 

Didn't get around to adding more drings just yet. How many drings comes stock from factory? 4, correct?

 

I had a my friends Triumph in the bed of my SB, wheel on the tailgate, hit a bump and folded my tailgate like a taco. I bent it back and so it would at least close, and some jackass stole it less than week later. I always wondered how long it took him to realize he stole a worthless tailgate.

 

Wow, where do you live that you got your bent tail gate stolen? Makes sense to do the cheap tailgate clamp mod. Well in any case, Im glad I ordered the reinforcement plate.

 

The cost is not the same. Mobtown comes powder coated, whereas Relentless costs extra.

I compared Mobtown vs Relentless, and chose Mobtown.

With Relentless, I found the following issues in the above mentioned thread:

* more expensive
* shipping more costly
* bend too tight, scratching tailgate
* top OEM screws do not fit, requiring additional screw purchase
* history of misaligned holes
* history of shipping damage, resulting in bent product and cracked power coating
* periodic communication problems with vendor

I think you made a wise purchase going with Mobtown.

 

Northern CA. They were stealing them and selling them. I think the cops finally nailed the main group that was doing. Was a real issue for few years.

 

My buddy has an access cab and he bent his tail gate loading a sport bike into the bed. I think if it's something you ate going to do once then your probably safe but if your going to be doing it all the time then I would want to reinforce it.
