I have a 99 Xtra cab V6 5 speed with 255/75 tires and I'm looking for upgrades to make it better at hauling my toys. I have a 16ft boat and a snowmobile that I put in the back frequently and when I do this the truck seems to just be a dog. It sucks back gas and is really lacking in power and I'm looking to see what you guys have done to help with this problem whether it be power upgrades, gearing? Also wondering on if heavy leafs would be worth it as well those are the heaviest things I haul it does not seem to squad but just looking for opinions ride quality is important. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks for reading. Sorry about the grammar and spelling mistakes in advance.

My opinion, but unless you supercharge or upgrade to 2nd gen, I don't think your gonna get more power. Leafs are great, but mostly to avoid squat, but have a few other drawbacks.

Depends on how often you haul that sled. Keep in mind that when ever you aren’t hauling it, heavy leafs will be stiff as hell.

Imo, get airbags. You dont need some complicated air system, you can use a bike pump if you needed.

As for power, look, you have a v6 at least, but if you expect a powerhouse, you have the wrong truck unless you dump tons on money into super chsrges and other mods. If you want POWER, get something else.

That said, I towed my 2500 pound popup trailer for many years and never felt like it was a dog. I mean, I knew it was back there, but what do you expect from a 3.4L? IMO a 2nd or 3rd gen Tacoma isn’t going to be much better. Get a Tundra if it’s not enough oompf.

I’m with everyone else, either supercharge or new truck. That being said my current Tacoma and my last Tacoma have been supercharged, and it helps towing immensely. FFA97BC4-5AD0-49DE-B891-70B18F5C573B.jpg
This was the worst I ever did with my 2000 5 speed. No trailer brakes, and it was before I did my tundra brake upgrade. It was lifted on 33’s

this is the heaviest I’ve done with my 04, tundra brakes and trans cooler were installed, but this was before I did trailer brakes. These trucks will tow with some decent power added, and a supercharger is the best way to add a lot of power in my opinion

Not sure why you think your truck is a Dog when loaded.

    Engine getting old and tired??002.jpg

Are you in the Mountain West pulling up those passes I would worry more about getting down.

If you feel that way time for a full size Truck

This is my normal day for my truck .

Helper springs will do the trick and of course a supercharger will too,

I referred my 2000 to 4.56’s, but not for towing. I did it to match my larger tires.

Other than the supercharger, there are other upgrades you can do to help with towing. One is the heavy duty fan clutch, or the “green hub” fan clutch as it is known on Tacomaworld. Tundra brake upgrade is another good towing upgrade, but you need to upgrade to 16 inch wheels before you do the upgrade. Otherwise trailer brakes, and a general understanding that the truck will not drive like it did unloaded, no truck will and if you expect it to you’ll be disappointed every time.

They are just too big for a lot of us unfortunately. Depending if you have to work in the city or the size of your garage.

An older city they are impossible to park and going down the small streets that barely let two cars go pass

And if you 4x4 trails you want the small truck for the mountain trails
