    Guys,

Just got my TRD off road 6 speed manual last week and I am loving it. I do worry about this hauling whining noise on the road while driving around 40-70mph. I found a video on youtube where a guy is having my same issue and you can hear the noise. Any opinions help will help thank you guys, here is the video

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

Are the holes filled in the Lower Control arms? A lot of people had the howling and they have plugs that fill the holes

What, hauling in a pickup?.... confused. That's my primary reason for purchase.....

The vid sounds like he's driving next to a freight train.....just sayin..

    @smitty99 ?

Has anyone with the rear diff howling noise think this is the sound??

Has anyone with the sound changed rear diff fluid from 75w85 to 75w90 - I don't have the noise but am thinking of servicing my truck this week and changing to the slightly heavier fluid. Thought?? My research says go to the 75w90 full synthetic.

That's my video, it is the rear diff. They replaced the diff, the new one still howls albeit it is a little quieter than the first one. Toyota says the new howl is "acceptable" to them.

Here is the 2nd differential, one day after replacement. Note Toyota has officially considered this one "normal" and closed the case:

Sounds remarkably the same... just sayin....

Did you try 75w90 in the rear diff... I'm thinking of servicing my manual trans and diffs and just change them all to 75w90 synthetic... call it a day.

Changing fluid will make it quitter. Not a fix though

Yeah, they didn't justify it in what I would consider an acceptable manner. Their response was along the lines of:

"Engineers at Toyota have analyzed both videos and all information given to them by the service team and have assessed that the noise in the 2nd differential is at an acceptable level. They believe it is not a concern at this time. It is documented and under warranty in case 'anything happens' in the future. If the noise gets worse over time, it will be re-evaluated. We are closing the case and setting the issue to resolved."

When I tried to press for what an acceptable level was, they didn't answer with anything concrete other than "the current noise level in the new differential." All I could get was that it was possibly a resonance of the gears and that inadequate sound damping inherent to the design of the vehicle could be a cause for me hearing it in the cabin. They saw no apparent mechanical damage when the differential was taken off the vehicle.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it when you get that response, short of selling the truck. They did give me an extended warranty to "ease my concerns" though.

I don't have the noise I don't think.. I have larger tires A/T style and a cat back exhaust.. so hard to say if I did I wouldn't be able to hear it.

I'm just going to switch to the 75w90 gear oil in the diffs and m/t. Doesn't make much sense to keep all the different viscosity types when one is the superior choice.

Thank you all for your help. I am afraid the rear end is gonna go and dont know what to do. Is it worth it to take in and get a "this is normal response" Look at this video: Looks like we are in for weak differentials. So sad

Besides the larger OR axles, isn't most the same 8" as they have been using for years?

I saw a video by the toyota tacoma and tundra chief engineer and he said the rear end is brand new.
