Have 2019 Sport - 2020 TRD Pro on order - decision time

    I've got a question for ya'll here...

I currently have a 2019 TRD Sport. I have been on the list for a 2020 TRD Pro for months now and I'm sick of waiting. Additionally, after seeing the camera implementation in the 2020's, they look absolutely atrocious. Resolution is garbage and the top-down view looks like something straight out of the early 2000s. Toyota really crapped the bed on that.

So that brings me to my decision time. I've been holding off on the mods because I was waiting on the Pro. The only thing I'm really missing is the MTS/Crawl Control - how important is that, really, in the grand scheme of things? Should I try to get a used OR, or would ya'll just get an ARB rear locker, upgrade the suspension, regear and call it good on the Sport at this point?

I'm having a hard time justifying the upgrade to a Pro at this point after seeing it in person. I may as well just take that cash and upgrade either my Sport or see about getting a used OR and going from there. I feel like I may be in a better place upgrading the Sport with the above than going the Pro route and/or a used OR route.

What's everyones thoughts? What am I not considering?

Oh, and I figured I should add that I don't really plan on doing much rock crawling, if any. I mainly use the truck for overlanding and don't really have a lot of interest in getting into technical trails unless absolutely necessary.

Based on what you said you dont even need MTS/Crawl Control. You probably dont even need a locking rear diff. I think the sport will serve you 100%. Now if you are wanting others to come in and justify your want for an offroad then I say buy ittt

Keep your Sport, lift it and mod it some. Its an extremely capable off road vehicle. I very rarely do any off reading these days and see people tearing up their new trucks, anyhow enjoy your truck. I did a lot of Pro modes using OEM parts, grill, 4 runner pro wheels, skid, exhaust, heated leather and more. I have a dclb and kind of made my own Pro and extremely satisfied.

MTS crawl is nothing to dump a nearly brand new truck for.
For the amount you're going to lose on trade, you could add a locker, and other Pro doodads. If you don't need/want the Pro suspension, I see no need to pay the additional thousands for cosmetics. Same cosmetics some pay China to ripoff, and are readily available now.

Be financially responsible. Keep your 2019 Sport at LEAST until the new and improved 4th generation Taco debuts. I never understood owners trading in a 3rd generation in for another 3rd generation. The only people who will be showing you some love are the Toyota dealership and the bank if you take out a loan.

Wise words. You will be money ahead to keep your Sport. If you really get into "overlanding" in the future, you can look at your options then.

You have a 2019 already, the pro package is nice for 2020 but not nice enough to upgrade from what you got. Just personal opinion coming from a 2020 pro owner. I'd upgrade your sport if you must and Wait for 4th gen, see what it has to offer. Than make a decision.

Like others have said, the 4th gen is supposedly coming 2022-2023, I would just wait as I'm sure it will have alot more updates including powertrain and be on the new TGNA platform even if you hate it you can probably get a deal on the 2022 or whatever last year of the 3rd gen.

I came from a '13 Sport, but if I already had a 3rd gen I wouldn't have this 2020 Pro right now. Unless you have some crazy boggy trails, I wouldn't worry about the lack of a locker. The Auto LSD is decent enough for most of the trail with non-stupid driving. Only time I got stuck with the old truck was with stupid driving :D

I’m one of those people lol. I was one of those people who said they would never buy a first model year anything and I went against my better judgement and got a one owner, well maintained, clean CarFax 2016 with 60k miles with Toyota certified warranty. Within the three months I had it all the TSBs seemed to happen. Leaking rear diff, timing cover chain leaking, gasket on one of the doors was faulty this was just in 3 months of ownership. I honestly was sick of it being in the shop more than me driving it so I traded in for a 2020. I feel like by now most of the transmission issues and bugs have been ironed out. If not having the Toyota first owner power train warranty for life should help.

Keep the sport. 2019 to 2020 I would only change if it was having a lot of mechanical issues etc but for 2019 they should most be resolved by now. Also some people mentioned waiting for a 4th gen Tacoma, never ever buy a first model year so can you see yourself waiting possibly 5 more years or more to get into one if you truly are unhappy that you didn’t get an off-road or pro model. I had a 2016 and kept trying to tell myself it didn’t make sense to trade in for a 2020 but I had so many mechanical issues I knew I wouldn’t want to wait that long for the second or third year 4th gen.

I've gone round and round with the idea since the pro's came out, even had a couple on deposit but I just couldn't justify the
cash I'd lose. Like you, I have no real need that justifies a locker/crawl control. I kept thinking that all the 2016 issues would
work themselves out on the new ones but I still see many with the same problems I "had", after 14 dealer fixes :D all under
warranty... no way I'd trade it now that I have zero complaints.

I decided to keep the Sport. Going to regear to 5.29 and put some lockers in at the same time. Will probably spring for a lift and suspension upgrade sometime in the spring.
