    I am thinking of upgrading my 4-Cyl 5-Speed MT Tacoma to a DCSB TRD, but I cannot bring myself to purchase an automatic transmission, so I intend to search for a 6-speed MT. Call me set in my ways.

    I love my 5 speed, but I am little scared of things I've read about the 6-Speed MT - e.g. throwout bearing noise, etc.

    Are those problems still around with the 2014/2015 models, or has Toyota fixed the issue?

    No problems with mine after 20k miles of driving it like it's stolen. There's a guy on here with 350k+ miles on the original clutch and TO with no issues.

    From what I've heard, the 5 speed trans is more reliable than the 6 speed... the r155(f) was the successor to the 5 speed in the 1st gen tacoma I believe

    As I said, I love my current 5 speed. I drained the factory gear oil at 15k and put in Redline GL4, and it shifts like butter.

    go for the auto with the v6..... you RARELY see any threads with issues with the auto and 90% of the time its due to old / low fluid. the 6 speed on the other hand..... shity shifts, TOB issues up the yinyang.

    55K on my 2011 6spd works fine I have no complaints. Reliability is not a problem learning how to use the 6 spd is. I have been driving sticks for 52 years from 3 spd column shift to Mack tirplex I owned one automatic I hated it.

    29k on my DCSB MT and no transmission noises or problems other than a little notchy going into third. i'm still on original fluid and will be upgrading in less than 1000 miles. i love mine and i've never been a fan of automatics.

    I've only been driving a stick since Nixon was president (42 yrs). Used to have a Chevy Impala with 3-on-the-tree.

    I have a 2013 6-speed with 13k on the odo
    about 60% has been off road and 40% on road,
    Like the OP, I refuse to get an auto and although I've been driving manual my whole life, Off-roading has been a total new hobby that i picked up when I got this truck, and I havent been gentle on my clutch (mainly because in the begining I didnt trust 4lo as much as I should have and would ride the shit out of the clutch like a mofo) and with this being said, I havent had any clutch/TB/ISB issues so far...

    auto off road hands down.... yall can smoke your clutch, i can two foot and not roll back an inch.

    and the drive to work in the morning is so much nicer being able to hold my coffee... and with my recent left foot break, id be up shits creek with a MT.

    my 08 is fine. no issue since i have had it from 70k miles.

    currently at 108k with smoking the clutch a few different times.

    is the auto better? for someone that wants one, yes.

    but if a manual is what you want, the manual will probly be better

    Yeah well I can hold 13 cups of coffee at the same time! Drove my old Chevy truck 4 spd. many years ago with a broken leg using my crutch.

    Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
    Personally, you'd have way more fun buying a automatic V6 truck and then a small sporty manual car for the experience. Manuals in trucks are sluggish and boring, they are way more fun with a zippy little car, but that's just my opinion. Go with what you like, the 6spd is a solid tranny though, just takes some getting used to. Never heard of one failing before so they must be good.
