I love the tech features and interior upgrades on the 3rd gen also most of the exterior styling is superior on 3rd gen in my opinion. However, much prefer the way the 2015 drives.

There is no logical explanation for the transmission changing on its own so drastically from 5000 mi to 9000 mi as you describe it. So you either had something tweaked, fixed (AT fluid filled) or just got used to the way it drives.

Have to laugh at this - I ended up selling my titan as it was the absolute worst mileage I have ever imagined, sucked more gas than an old carbed 460 big block Ford. I will say after I lifted it - put it on 35's, and tuned it - it would simply roast the tires and walk sideways just by mashing the throttle. One of the best engines I ever owned, but the mileage was horrible, I could not get over 14 on highway when stock, after lifted - 13 highway - after tune, loosing cats, exhaust etc, I got 15 one time at 70mph down wind lol.

I'm not sure where I'm at - I'm back on here lurking alot though, I had a 2015 ordered but cancelled it last May - and now looking and watching the 3rd Gens, but I'm about 2-3 months way from buying. I guess I need to test drive the 6 speed manual with the 3.5, drove the auto and would not buy it unless there was a factory supported boost to add to it - turbo or supercharger which is dead now....

I didn't read all 4 pages of this thread, but in case no one has mentioned it, there is an update to the '16 transmission (I don't even know what that means– software update?) that I have only seen a few people mention here on the Tacomaworld forum. I called yesterday to check on it and the service manager was quick to let me know that there absolutely is an update and scheduled me for Monday (tomorrow) morning to have it done on my truck. My truck seems to be "lost" at certain RPMs and shifts HARD when slowing down to a stop. He (service manager I spoke to) claims this update should take care of all of this.

The "update" is probably putting the correct amount of transmission fluid in it.

    You're probably right! Ha
My question is how is it even possible that all of the trucks leave factory low on trans fluid?

posts here suggest it seems to be the ones with tow package that have a tranny cooler. i am assuming but i think the tranny is filled from a large tank and the how much fluid is pre set and the proper setting for the trucks with the cooler is not taken into consideration. just guessing, don't think they open up 1 quart bottles.

I specifically asked the dealer to check the level prior to delivery, mentioned the concern and told them I would be willing to pay the extra labor if not part of PDI (it wasn't). Level was correct with towing package installed, truck was built in TX.

Did you physically sit and watch them check the fluid?

Yes I did. Truck was there getting wheels, tires and roof rack installed also, I had a day to kill time and I wanted to be sure.

I also don't have hard shifting issues since delivery.

Still doesn't hurt to have it checked. We have a saying in the gubment, "trust, but verify".

If you're going to have Trans fluid level checked I highly encourage you to watch them do it. Just checking the computer isn't good enough and it is not such an easy or short process to check a sealed system such as the one on these trucks.

    I agree.

And I'd also recommend having it checked during the first few service intervals until satisfied its operating as you feel it should. It just backs up warranty claims later.

Unless you can see that they are checking the level, its highly unlikely they will even crack bolt open or do anything.
Because.... there is no dipstick to check level...
The only way to get proper level is to overfill, than drain excess, because there is no dipstick to "check level" like in old days. So if dealer said they check level and they did not charge you for single QT of WS fluid that means they did nothing...

Toyota screwed up Tundra, they put nice engine but than installed weak ass frame, so Tundra is under in towing or payload. Hence with exception of few people liking Tundra, and having Toyota employee discount, everybody else who need full size will buy something else (FORD, Chevy, RAM).
Now 2016 Tacoma has been "redesigned" like Tundra. We see where that takes Toyota.
