Mine is on its way out, so I'm just comparing options. It is a 4x4 e-locker.

    Thank you!

Will be a very expensive lesson if you do it wrong. Find a shop or order from east coast gear supply

Little confused by the question. Are you asking if many/any here have rebuilt the 3rd member by themself, or if they’ve had them rebuilt professionally?

Rebuilding yourself, like @02hilux was alluding to, is very difficult for the layman. It requires special tools (dial indicator to measure backlash) and considerable knowledge (what the fuck is backlash and how do you apply it?), and if you make a mistake, it could cost you. At minimum (and if you’re very lucky) you’re out no parts but the time to uninstall everything you did and redo it correctly, hopefully with the aptitude required to now do it correctly.

    Worse case is worse.

My question is "Has anyone personally rebuilt their own differential by themselves?"

If you have a press, a clamshell bearing puller, and the patience to set a crush sleeve or shim out the pinion preload, then there’s no real reason you can’t do it yourself. You don’t even need the bearing puller but it makes life much easier.

If you are just simple replacing the 4 bearings, races and pinion seal, then there’s is really nothing special to the job. You don’t need to set back up backladh or anything else, you just need to achieve proper pinion bearing preload via the new crush sleeve (or shims if using a crush sleeve eliminator kit). For the carrier bearings you just need the keep the shims on the same side they are on.

There’s really not much to screw up unless you just plain don’t know what you’re doing and don’t have the tools to do the job. If you have the tools and the knowledge, it’s really not that bad.

Go with OEM bearings and seals (assuming they are available).

Youre saying I can replace mine with a bigger one? Interesting...
