Have they made any Xtra Cabs yet?

I'm at a time in my life where the access cab of prior gens and Xtra cab of Gen 4 seems a better vehicle for me with a 6ft bed but I have yet to see any anywhere... I thought they were to be releasing them around May or June but I can't find one on Toyota Smartpath, Cars(dot)com, or local stealerships for the life of me...

Did they give a new date of release or something?

I’ve seen a handful listed online in recent weeks, but none in my region. I’m in the same position- they’re sharp looking to boot!

Toyota just needs to start shipping them in decent quantities. There are only 21 Xtra cabs listed in a CarGurus nationwide search compared to 14,638 crew cabs available.

Only available in the US, not Canada. Looks like you're in the US. That was my first pick too, I don't need to sit people in the backseat, and when I do, it's only for short trips, so comfort is the least of my priority. I don't like the length of crew cab + long box, too long to manoeuvre, that's the reason I went to a quarter ton and selling my half ton.

I went to talk to the salesperson at my local dealer. I’ve known her for 30 years. I wanted to get a Prerunner from their allocation without all the port add ons. She said no problem, be about 4 weeks. She called me back that afternoon and said there were no more allocations and no production date. There were 2 in the whole state of Texas, both had $3,000 of crap. I gave up and said get one. It’s serial number 4800.

I’ve had it for a week. I love the engine and transmission. I hate the nanny stuff. I like the rear storage, but you can’t get to it. My old 2002 Xtracab had straight doors and the front seat cleared the door frame. The new door frame tilts forward and blocks access to the rear. You have to crawl over a very tall seat. I'm in the same boat. TRD Sport AC here and waiting out for XTRA SR5 but that looks like Toyota went backwards a step.

I am probably late to the party bitching about this, but super frustrating that Toyota (and all other small truck makers) have all but killed the extended cab. No TRD Off Road, and more bizarrely the manual transmission is only available with the double cab as well?? Could that be an error in the configurator?

Hypothetically if one was to start with an SR, how are the aftermarket locking differential options these days?

Yeah this really pisses me off too. I did not want a double cab. I just needed the two gimpy seats for when I have to randomly haul two small humans around. Didn't want the longer wheelbase, didn't need the extra weight, the complexity. Instead I got a 4Runner with a bed on it.

    Never too late to bitch.

It's not new, but still not an excuse. My 2012 Xterra Pro4x was the only trim with 6MT and locker. None of the other truck manufacturers now offer MT except Toyota in North America, while the rest of the planet have access to them.

If you're lucky, Eaton makes an automatic mechanical locker for it. Had 2 GMC with those, beats electric lockers.

Not sure exactly what model of locker you're referring to, but I've heard of & seen installs of those cable-operated front lockers in GM/Ford trucks -- but never in Toyotas.

Unfortunately I don't think there are any cable-operated diff lock options for Toyota?

I sure would like to have on vs. the complexity & failure modes of the electric or air-operated lockers.

Referring to the G80, if one wheel spins more than 100 rpm faster than the other, it automatically locks. Unlocks when there's no more tension. And I have no idea what they're available, just know GM has them.

The only option *might* be Eaton? Totally out of the loop on these today but 20 years ago there was the Detroit locker and ARB airlocker. I guess I assumed there would be more/better options today...

Also for reference this would be a daily driver so it needs to be very streetable

.....I'm not eliminating that from my options to stay away from 4cyls and hair dryers...but I'd get marginally better mileage for 2 or 3X the probable headaches. That jury is still out but not looking positive to me

I was also considering 4Runner. Right now a TRD Off Road 4Runner is about the same price as an equivalent Tacoma - something I am sure will be 'corrected' when the new 4Runner comes out. But it would be a significant downgrade for car camping - and at 5'9 I don't think I can quite stretch out in one for sleeping. But it still has a longer cargo space than a short bed Tacoma:mad:.

Honestly I was not in the market for a new vehicle. Currently I have 180k miles on a manual transmission 2012 Access Cab TRD Off road with bed cap, which I sleep in on on camping/climbing trips. But the prospect of every reasonable truck configuration disappearing while prices continue to jack up with no end in sight has me reconsidering. One thing I will not compromise on is a locking differential. Such a no brainer for massive increase in capability with zero impact to street driving. If I were king of the world every car would have one standard, the only exception being an allowance to substitute a limited slip on sports cars
