I call BS on the airbags fictioning as designed. If bottoming out causes airbags to deploy on Tacos, @Sub-Zero ‘s truck would be totaled. Mine too as a matter of fact. I did this too on a previous trip. Just not AS hard.

I would just keep the truck and turn it into a pure offroad beast. No need for Airbags as long as you don't get on the road. Then use the cash as down payment on a new truck, probably one that can tow this one.

There was whole crowd of people looking at the truck at the Toyota collision center. No one could figure out what happened. The truck looks totally fine and there's barely a mark on the skid plate. Main reason I was fighting with Toyota for so long.

And what about the thread about the Taco that smashed into the concrete steps at the back of a house, crumpled the front end, and the bags DIDN'T deploy...

in my case the truck was towed to an autobody shop/yard I was told the truck was totaled/writeoff was given a check for the value(pretty good $) and then the autobody shop owner told me I needed to get the truck off his lot or a daily fee would be instituted, called a scrapyard buddy to come get it from the yard he gave me $200 scrap metal and I gave him the title, the insurance company was not involved, if I had a place to tow it to I could have done what I pleased with it.

That is not typical anymore at all and I have never heard of an ins operating in that manner.

the ugly with those lotsa-airbag deployments is the side impact airbags destroy the seats, the passenger airbag destroys the dashboard, and if there's airbags in the B or A pillars or whatever, those get trashed, too.

The side curtain airbags even dented my roof on both sides.

OP did you turn off the side airbags before you went off-roading?

Trying to fix a truck that is/has been totaled will be nightmare you do not want. If you like that truck, get another one, realistically you cannot make a better investment. I traded my second Gen. for a third Gen. once I worked threw the Transmission issue. I could not be happier with it.

Replacing the airbags and finding new seats is going to be a pain in the ass. Even when you replace everything things like the side curtains and dash will never look like new again. Plus you'll have to deal with having a rebuilt title and losing major resale value. May be easier to take the loss and move on to another taco.

Definitely go for another manual second gen!

Just remember if you buy used, the airbags could have been stolen out of them..... :D

I hit a diesel spill on a curve and slammed a telephone pole at 30 mph head-on. Not a single airbag went off, which surprised me. That truck was totaled (‘15 DCSB MT) and it was less than 1 month old.

Atleast the insurance is paying out and not giving you a hard time. Usually in insurance policies there are disclaimers saying they won't pay for off roading and race damages.
