just curious about people with the shakes and vibs, did you also get new wheels. changing wheels might not sit the wheel on the hub or lugs properly which can cause shakes and vibs

I will be replacing the wheel bearing assembly tonight. I lifted the truck yesterday and when I rotate the tire I hear a grinding sound from the drivers side and its smooth on the passenger side. Definately the problem. I plan to take lots of pics and create a how to replace the wheel bearing shortly if there isnt one already.

The vibes for me didnt start when I got new wheels/tires. They started a good 6 months or so later. Got worse when I rotated my tires for some reason. Took the tires in to get ballanced but problem didnt get fixed. Now I know its the wheel bearing. I will let you know if the vibs disapear when the new bearing is in place.

If you feel it braking might need to machine to rotors

x2 most likely the cause is warped rotors

What is involved in dropping the carrier bearing?

Loosen two bolts, slide a spacer on one side/tighten... then the other. Super easy. 25 ft/lb is spec I think..

Just wanted to shoot up a post and share my results after putting in a carrier bearing drop kit. I have a '05 4WD DC LB with Bilstein 5100's all around (set at 0), a 1.5" Toytec AAL in the back and Eibach springs up front. Basically this results in about 1.5" of lift all the way around. I'm also running 265/70/17 BFG AT KO's if that matters. The shutter in the steering wheel was driving me crazy and after three alignments and four tire balances (including a road force balance) I was still having issues. I was reluctant to do the bearing drop since most of the things I was reading said it was only really necessary with 3+ inches of lift but I said what the hell it's only $10 and seems easy to put in. All I can say is that it helped dramatically, shutter is now almost non-existent and it rides much much smoother on the highway. Just wanted to share my experience in case there others out there experiencing the same problem with a minimal lift like mine. Give it a shot...you never know!

P.S. Does anyone know for sure what the service manual specifies for the torque setting on the bolts holding up the carrier bearing? I've seen numbers ranging from 25 to 50 ft/lbs on here and was just curious what it should be. I set mine to 35 ft/lbs since that seemed to be what my original bolts where at (after some trial and error) but wanted to be sure I had them set correctly.

Not sure on exact but i dont think it matters because you are just holding the bearing up to the bed of the truck. Your not clamping or pressing anything wiht the bolts. I would say go with as tight as you can get them with standard wrench or the higher you have seen. Dont want them to unscrew on you driving down the road.

I put the Toytec 3" spacer lift with the AAL on my 09 Tacoma. I had small vibrations when accelerating around 5-10 mph it sounds like the problem is the rear shim that didn't come with the package. So I'm going to buy the shims and while I'm at it I'm going to get the diff. drop and sway bar relocates that were also missing in the package. :D

I voted no in the poll but since have experienced a vibration. Since then, I have also cranked up my front coilovers another inch or so and raised the rear another inch. Pretty sure the vibration are caused from the rear lift.

It's only right around 25-30 mph and at first I thought it was just the tires, that's how it feels.

I have a diff drop so gonna throw that in and see if it does anything for better or worse. Will take it out if it makes it worse.

It's a bad wheel bearing if it sounds like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL1dl_M0Nxs. I changed the bearing and the noise and most the vibes disapeared. Now its just the propeller shaft shaking around and the need for an alignment.
I took pictures and started a writeup but found this one: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307494&highlight=hub+assembly. Very good writeup. I figure I can rewrite one for TW and add in extra details when I have time and get someone to sticky it (eventually).

if you drop your carrier bearing hold it up with a jack you have two nuts one on left one on rite. its Not hard at all it holds up your two piece drive line.

25 ft lb is what I read..

I have since added the 3 degree shims on the rear axle, and that seems to help too. Now I have an itty bitty "thing" under hard acceleration from a dead stop and that is it. Pretty sure it's just Axle wrap.
